I'm glad województwo warmińsko-mazurskie (southern 2/3 of East Prussia) is having better and better architecture: both modern and "retroversionist".

The only problem that has emerged in architecture are horrible modernisations of commieblocks Which are among the worst in Poland and unfortunately typical for most cities (Olsztyn, Giżycko/Lyck, Bartoszyce, Dobre Miasto are the most horrific examples)

Anyone know of any plans to restore these two 19th century buildings in Kaliningrad? Or even put them to use since they seem abandoned.

Szymbark/Schönberg
The castle in Szymbark/Schönberg belonged to chapter of Marienwerder/Kwidzyn, and was built by Heinrich von Skerlin in 1386. The castle belonged to the Teutonic Order until 1520. During the Protestant Reformation Albert of Prussia, the last Grand Master, transferred the castle to the bishopric of Samland. The family of bishop Geog von Polentz turned the castle into a Renaissance residence. Later the castle was sold several times, among others to the families of Eulenburg-Prassen and Schlieben-Birkenfeld, until the Finck von Finckensteins, one of the great Prussian families, aquired the castle in 1699. The Finck von Finckensteins owned the castle until 1945.
After 1990 the castle was privatized several times. Today the castle is a ruin and owned by a rich Polish business man.

The castle was destroyed by Red Army () and partially reconstructed in the 1960s. I hope it will be fully rebuilt soon.

Beautiful. There is a special poignancy to this thread. The city of Koinigsberg was once part of western Christian civilization and it can never be what it once was.

Life on the Curonian Spit
Some pics of a lost world

Krajebieter, Low German for Kraehenbeisser = crow biters, were fishermen that catched crows during the autumn months.
They used tamed crows as baits:

Hid behind lop shacks and waited for the wild crows:

When the crows were catched with a net a bite in the head immediately killed the birds:

The crows were either used as food during the winter months or sold to restaurants in Koenigsberg and offered as a specialty.

Another typical dish were dried flounders:

The boats of the fishermen were the most distinctive symbol of the Curonian Spit:
