I already posted this thought in the Indian thread, and I don't want to come off as a troll by repeating a post, but practically they should have had the Colaba-SEEPZ line be "Line 2" and the Dahisar-Mankhurd line be "Line 3".

Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety starts his inspection of Mumbai Metro
18 Apr 2014

Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) P S Baghel (centre) during his inspection on Friday

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), P S Baghel on Friday started his inspection of 11.04 km long Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) metro line.

The inspection which began at 10.30 am went on till 6 pm.

Speaking to mid-day, Baghel said, "I started the inspection from metro car depot at D N Nagar at 10.30 am on Friday and it went on till 6 pm. Today (Friday), I inspected the rolling stock and the schedule for inspection is till April 28."

It should be noted that at present the VAG line has already received approval from RDSO, the research wing of Indian Railways.

CMRS safety check is the last statutory certification requirement before the line is opened to the public.

With opening of the line the journey on the route will be reduced to approximately 20 minutes from almost two hours. Post receiving the RDSO certification on April 2nd. MMOPL applied to CMRS on April 4 and in the meanwhile was in the process of preparing for the safety inspection.

The CMRS will inspect the entire Metro system which includes rolling stocks, workshop, depot, OCC, corridor, stations, track, OHE.

“On being satisfied after detailed tests and trials, the CMRS would authorise MMOPL to commence passenger operations on the line. Thereafter, MMOPL has to approach the Ministry of Railways for declaring the line open for public carriage” an MMOPL official said

Mumbai Metro: VAG line gets final safety certificate
03 May 2014

Check: The Metro will be opened only after receiving all the clearances

Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety gave first Metro line its final safety certification yesterday; now, only the clearance of trains is awaited from the railway board

It’s only a matter of time before the much-awaited 11.04-km long Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) Metro line opens its doors to the public. After encountering several roadblocks along the way, the first Metro line is just a step away from its inauguration, with the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) giving the mammoth project its final safety certification.

Speaking to mid-day, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) chief UPS Madan said, “The CMRS gave his clearance for Metro One on Friday. Clearance of rolling stock (trains) from the railway board, however, is still awaited. The Metro will be opened only after the final nod from the board.”

Getting the CMRS certification is crucial in terms of getting the Metro line up and running. The Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) spokesperson said, “We are happy to announce that CMRS, after carrying out its intensive safety inspection, has given its sanction for the opening of the line. Now, we are only awaiting the approval of the railway board on its rolling stock, for which the required papers have been submitted on April 22 this year. We shall open the line for commercial use within seven days of receipt of the approval.”

The CMRS safety check was the last statutory certification requirement for the VAG line to go live. The commission started the Metro’s inspection from April 18. Since then, it inspected the entire Metro system, including rolling stocks, workshops, depots, corridors, stations and tracks. And after receiving certification from the Research, Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), the MMOPL applied to the CMRS on April 4.

With the line operational, the journey between Versova and Ghatkopar will be reduced to approximately 20 minutes, from the current two hours via other transport

VAG metro line to begin in June?
25 May 2014

The Railway Board has finally given the permissions required to open the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro line for commuters

The much-awaited mode of public transport in Mumbai the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) Metro rail may soon be reality. According to sources, the Railway Board, under the Ministry of Railways, has cleared vital permission required to start the commercial run of the Mumbai Metro rail between Versova and Ghatkopar.

The Metro rail was stuck because the Indian Railways had not finished inspecting the rolling stock that will be used during commercial operations. Railway officials said that the rakes and wheels used in the metro are of a new kind, with newer dimensions, and required close inspection.

They have been manufactured by a Chinese company, Nanjing SR Puzhen Rail Transport (NPRT). “The Railway Board in Delhi has signed the required approvals now, and will send to the Metro rail authorities here in Mumbai,” said a source.

The Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) spokesperson confirmed that they await the approval on the rolling stock from the Railway Board. “We submitted the required papers on April 22, 2014. We will open the line within seven days of approval.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety has demanded minor changes, such as levelling of access area at the metro station of Jagruti Nagar (towards Ghatkopar), and has asked the authorities to improve the quality of elevators and stairs.

These conditions must be accepted and incorporated before the metro begins operations. Mumbaikars can expect the VAG Metro rail corridor can be expected to begin operations by June 10, if things go according to schedule.

However, the delay carrying out work, which includes the delay in giving Right Of Way (ROW) at certain stretches, has resulted in cost escalation. The project cost of this 11.04-km metro line has touched R4,200 crore nowf

Mumbai Metro may go in for soft launch this Sunday
Jun 7, 2014, 05.55 AM IST

Sources in the know said services on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, that is, Phase I of the Metro, would begin on Sunday, though there was no official confirmation from the operator, photo by TOI

MUMBAI: Will Mumbaikars get to travel on the much-awaited Metro starting this Sunday?

Sources in the know said services on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, that is, Phase I of the Metro, would begin on Sunday, though there was no official confirmation from the operator, Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd (MMOPL) or the state agency, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

"The R-Infra-promoted MMOPL is all geared up to start commercial operations on Sunday. Since it is a holiday, the passenger count will be low, but it would be enough to help iron out minor issues before Monday, when the crowds are expected to increase considerably," sources said.

BJP MPs from the city Kirit Somaiya and Gopal Shetty, in fact, said they would not wait for Sunday. Alleging that the state government was delaying operations, they claimed they would board the Metro from Ghatkopar at 3 pm on Saturday to inaugurate it.

"We will be at Ghatkopar station with our supporters and try to board the Metro in an attempt to force the government to start commercial runs," said Shetty. MMOPL officials declined comment on the MPs' plan.

The final decks for the commercial run were cleared on Thursday when the Railway Board approved the rolling stocks, rakes and electrification.

Sources said the fare issue had also been resolved on Friday, so the minimum fare will be Rs 10 and the maximum, Rs 40.

Metro I will reduce travel time on the 12-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor to 21 minutes as against one hour that it takes to cover the stretch by road.

The start of services will also mean that the Metro would be the fourth type of mass transport in the city, after the suburban railway, BEST buses and mono rail.

There will be around 200 service on the corridor every day. "During peak hours, we will run a train every four minutes, and at other times the frequency will come down to 8-10 minutes," sources said, adding that the service would be available from 5.30 am to 12 pm every day.

The Rs 4,321-crore project is expected to handle around 7 lakh commuters every day.

Apart from tickets, commuters can also buy token or smart cards, and the network will have state-of-the-art security systems and escalators at the stations.

Work on Phase I began in 2007, but the project missed multiple deadlines because of lack of right of way, changes in design and lack of approvals from the railways.

Mumbai metro train gets on track; Prithviraj Chavan launches services
8 Jun, 2014, 11.43AM IST

The metro train services on the 11.4 km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch, phase 1 of the project, will be available every four minutes

MUMBAI: The wait of Mumbaikars for metro services in the city came to an end when Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan flagged off the first service from Versova Station in the western suburb today.

The service was launched by Chavan along with ADAG Chairman Anil Ambani at 10.10 AM.

The launch of metro services will revolutionise the commutation of Mumbaikars, Chavan said after the launch.

With this service, the journey on the 11.4 km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch will reduce to 20 minutes which otherwise takes around 90 minutes at present by road transport.

The launch of the metro services was, however, not without controversy as Chavan had yesterday said that he will inaugurate the services only if MMOPL (Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd) adheres to the state government-notified fares. But, later on he agreed to flag-off the service.

Admitting that there was a dispute over the fares, Chavan expressed the hope that the issue will be resolved through court.

MMOPL Director Debashish Mohanty had yesterday said they would go ahead with the launch of the service today even if the Chief Minister does not come for the inauguration.

MMOPL and the state government have been locked in a dispute over the fares for quite some time. The operator fixed a minimum fare of Rs 10 and a maximum of Rs 40 for a one way journey, going against the Maharashtra government's notified fare band of Rs 9-13, citing cost escalation in the three-phase project, work on which began eight years ago.

MMOPL is a joint venture company comprising Anil Ambani's Reliance Infrastructure, Veolia Transport and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

MMRDA has already moved the Bombay High Court against the hike and the matter would come up for hearing tomorrow.

The metro train services on the 11.4 km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch, phase 1 of the project, will be available every four minutes.

MMOPL will operate 200-250 services a day, carrying around 11 lakh passengers. Every coach can carry 375 passengers, while the entire train can transport 1,500 commuters.

Over 70 lakh commuters use the suburban railway every day.

The metro service comes four months after the city got the country's first monorail between suburban Chembur and Wadala on February 1 this year
