Beijing-Shanghai? About 2:20 flight time.

Oh my goodness...sorry to be overly dramatic but mid-September of this year I went to Annecy(French Alps) and was the first time I've ever boarded a double-decker TGV Duplex.

Words can't describe how bloody incredible the journey was....from the high speed....to the breathtaking scenery from the Chambery mountains onwards. Because I was sitting in the lower deck(which is substantially lower to the ground than a normal train), the sensation of speed at 300 kmh was much greater and sometimes overwhelming compared to even a regular single deck TGV or Shinkansen. I have some proof with this short video I shot and hope I succeeded in capturing the crazy speed lol

Thanks oakwood!
I've been on the TGV Duplex 3 times now. 2 weeks ago I took one to Lyon and I just don't tire of travelling on these trains.
Why do you ask?

I asked for a simple reason, I was curious what it's like to ride the TGV train, I see that you have experience and you are traveling with him.

Ah I see. Well...it was a very smooth ride for me most times but I think I remember the 2nd time I went on a Duplex, it wasn't so smooth...a little more "bumpy".
I think it depends on many factors mainly from the passenger coaches like how old they are for example. Generally it is a very smooth ride and can't really complain at all.

For many years before, I wondered what it would be like to ride on a TGV Duplex specifically in the lower deck because I noticed how low the windows were to the ground which always made me suspect that the lower centre of gravity would greatly increase the sensation of speed. My suspicions were proved right when I boarded the Duplex for the first time recently.

It's a wonderful feeling going at 300 kmh in the lower deck of a TGV Duplex. You don't get that feeling of intense speed in the upper deck although you do get a better panoramic view of scenery...if that's your thing.

Interesting that you say the duplex coaches were less smooth - they are mostly newer. Perhaps the slight added weight forced the designers to tweak the suspension somewhat to change the wheel/rail dynamics. Also suspension is optimised for the unit's top speed, and going at a high-but-not-full speed usually finds the suspension's damping at it's most active, resulting in in a harder ride (suspension cannot be built to have a flat response characteristic, just like any filtering system it is a combination of tuned-resonances).

I have not raced in a TGV train, but I thought it was much stronger feelings on the underside of the deck, but on the upper. Thank you for the experience described, and I hope to repeat your experience driving in TGV.

Remember, I said I've been on the TGV Duplex 3 times and only once out of those 3 times...the ride was slightly less smooth. Every other time was smooth as butter.

I found the ride became less smooth when we were off the LGV lines and onto the classic lines. Perhaps this is when you had a less than smooth ride?

Nevertheless, the Duplex is still very smooth riding I must say.

I've never found TGV or Eurostar to not be smooth, although I've only been off-road (so to speak) on a TGV along the Cote D'Azur, and that seemed as smooth as can be.

Nah....it was the LGV. I have video footage to prove my point(although I can't be bothered to upload the vid on youtube lol)
I can only put it down to slight variations. Maybe the jakobs bogies needed to be replaced sooner rather than later in the coach that I was in?

As I said earlier tho...all other times were smooth as butter and that includes the ridiculous amount of times I've been on Eurostar too.
