SRT work drives CTV-Doll expansion in Khon Kaen

Cho Thavee Dollasien Plc (CTV-Doll), newly listed on the Market for Alternative Investment (MAI), plans to spend 250 million baht to expand production capacity of its Khon Kaen factory to accommodate its growing business.

Suradech Taweesaengsakulthai, the president and chief executive, said the investment will be made once the company wins the bidding for two State Railway of Thailand (SRT) projects _ locomotive engines and sleeper trains _ worth a combined 8 billion baht.

The SRT will announce the winning bids for the locomotive engines next month and for the sleeper trains in the third quarter.

CTV-Doll, a manufacturer of trucks, trailer bodies and components based in Khon Kaen province, is also submitting a bid to the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority for a 13.2-billion-baht NGV-bus project.

Mr Suradech said the company has also signed contracts to build 90 dry van semi-trailers worth 109 million baht for DHL Express International Co.

At present, CTV-Doll, with annual capacity to produce 600 trailers and 600 cold storage containers, has a 400-million-baht backlog, all of it from private companies.

The company has three main businesses _ standard trucks, trailers and NGV vehicles; special designs for vehicles such as military transport; and project management and services.

"Some 95% of our orders are from private companies. We need to expand our business more to cover the government projects," said Mr Suradech.

CTV-Doll expects 2013 revenue growth of 10% from last year's 706 million baht.

The company, founded in 1994 as a joint venture between Thailand's Khon Kaen Cho Thavee (1993) Co and Germany's Doll Fahrzeugbau AG, had its first day of trading on Monday from its initial public offering (IPO) price.

The company allocated 200 million IPO shares at 1.80 baht apiece.

Shares of Cho Thavee Dollasien (CHO) closed yesterday on the MAI at 2.82 baht, down eight satang, in trade worth 491 million baht.

Upcountry in focus as Lotus budgets Bt18-bn investment

Kwanchai Rungfapaisarn
The Nation May 31, 2013

Hypermarket chain Tesco Lotus will invest Bt18 billion in the Kingdom in fiscal year 2013, its chief executive said. Under the investment plan, it will open 10 new stores, more than 300 express outlets and a major distribution centre in Khon Kaen.

The company's fiscal year 2013 runs from March until February 2014.

The latest Tesco Lotus hypermarket was opened last week in Chachoengsao. Most of the hypermarkets to be opened this year will be upcountry.

The company will also refurbish a large number of stores, including four to six existing hypermarkets to be converted into the Extra format.

Part of the investment will be allocated to its online infrastructure.

The new distribution centre in Khon Kaen is designed to facilitate the expansion of its upcountry network.

Tesco Lotus achieved 16-per-cent growth in sales last fiscal year with the opening of 344 new stores. The company expected growth in fiscal 2013 to be similar to the previous year.

"Tesco Lotus has a strong business based on our multi-format strategy, which serves customers across all segments. With over 1,400 stores located around the country and our retail expertise, we have significant opportunities to make a positive difference to society. That's why we have been actively supporting our customers, colleagues and communities, and we will make even greater contributions as our business continues to grow," said Tesco Lotus chief executive John Christie.

He said Tesco Lotus would add 10,000 jobs, similar to last year, and announce 8,000 internal promotions. The company would also buy 45 per cent more fruit and vegetables from local farmers. The company exported about Bt13.5 billion of Thai products last year to its Tesco retail network. This year the focus would be on new countries such as China and South Korea.

"We will continue to expand the business through a multi-channel strategy and create bigger benefits for customers, colleagues and communities," Christie said.

"Through our five store formats - Extra, Hypermarket, Department Store, Talad and Express - and most recently online shopping, we have made shopping easier for customers whatever their lifestyle. Tesco Lotus also helps over 12 million customers a week save on their cost of living through our low prices for high quality products," he said.

He added that besides core customer values, Tesco Lotus is heavily focused on innovation to enhance customers' shopping experience, such as the recent launch of online shopping and self-service checkouts. The company has also been introducing the latest digital products such as new smart-phone models.

Christie said the growth of Tesco Lotus means more business opportunities for Thai SMEs and farmers. This year Tesco Lotus plans to buy 120,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables from Thai farmers, 45 per cent more than last year. The company will also continue to export Thai products through the network of 6,500 Tesco stores in 12 countries.

"'Using our scale for good' is our corporate value. We focus on areas important to Thai people, including creating more opportunities for young people by granting 365 university scholarships this year, improving people's health by investing more in health education campaigns and offering our retail space for public aerobics, and enhancing initiatives to reduce environmental impacts, which includes our success in reducing 8 million plastic bags and our energy consumption last year," Christie said.

Tesco Lotus is also committed to using its retail expertise to develop the capability of Thai businesses to world-class standards, he said. The company has launched many training programmes for local businesses and in March 2013, Tesco Lotus partnered Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration to inaugurate the first-of-its-kind "Retail Academy" to improve the skills of SME suppliers, he said.

Dusit looks to foreign shores

BAMRUNG AMNATCHAROENRIT
THE NATION May 27, 2013

The strengthening baht may have hurt some investors' sentiment, but Dusit International, the operator of Dusit Thani five-star hotels and resorts, says it is time to invest abroad.

Europe, the United States and Japan are in its focus as their currencies weaken against the baht, resulting in lower property prices for Thai investors.

In Europe, London has the most potential because this global financial capital is a gateway to the continent, so hotel accommodation is in demand year round. However, Paris is another option. Meanwhile the US market is also attractive, but is difficult to enter because of high competition.

Rustom Vickers, group director of development at Dusit International, told The Nation that having properties in the West would help fulfil the company's ambition to become a truly international brand. Also, it would strengthen its performance from continent to continent via chain connectivity.

In the past couple of years, the firm has prepared to go international seriously by recruiting skilled workers and installing reservation and operational systems to sustain its service standards. Vickers believes that Dusit will become a globally recognised hotel brand this year.

The international market is very important for securing the company's long-term business performance at a time when the hospitality business in Thailand is saturated, forcing room rates down. Also, higher operating costs, especially due to higher wages, are a factor.

Overseas expansion will be operated under three brands: the flagship Dusit Thani, Dusit Devarana, and dusitD2. The firm also operates Dusit serviced apartments.

Establishment of development offices in foreign cities is a key strategy. These offices will play a key role in looking for new properties and negotiating with local investors. Offices are already open in Seattle, Dubai, New Delhi and Hong Kong, and one is planned in the near future for Shanghai.

Between now and 2015, Dusit International plans to begin operating 12 new properties via management contracts in five nations. Over the next five years, it expects to have 50 hotels in its portfolio, half of them in Asia.

Currently, the firm operates 17 properties, mainly in Thailand and owned by the company. It expects that over the next five years, the number of properties it owns and those it operates via management contracts will be almost equal. It is also looking to expand its chain in Thailand, especially in secondary provinces such as Khon Kaen and Phuket, as well as on Koh Samui.

Southeast Asia is in its focus, particularly Myanmar, the Philippines and Indonesia, to cash in on the opening of the Asean Economic Community in 2015. In addition, China is considered a big market.

Over the next three years, there will be three openings in China. Two will be in Hainan under the Dusit Thani and Dusit Devarana brands, and the third one will be in Qingyuan, Guangdong province, under the flagship brand.

The Philippines is viewed as a promising market, thanks to its growing economy and reformed investment regulations, as well as construction of new airports and casinos to help promote local tourism. At present, the company operates a Dusit Thani in Manila and is in talks for launches of two new properties. Outside the capital city, it plans to sign a management contract with a property owner in Davao. In Singapore, the company will sign a contract with a property owner soon. It is also in talks in Myanmar. Business in China is expected to grow quickly. In January, the firm formed a joint venture with Changzhou Qiao Yu Group.
