The Verrière viaduct is a bit to the north of the Millau Viaduct. It was completed in 2002 (2 years before Millau). Eventhough it is not as big as Millau, it is still 140m high and 720m long.

The Pont-canal du Cacor is located near Moissac. It was built in 1867 to allow the Canal de Garonne to cross the Tarn. Too bad when I walked through Moissac, I was unaware of this bridge, otherwise I would have tried to see it.

The Saint-Antoine bridge is also called devil bridge. It was built in the 19th century but for long people believed that it dated back to the 13th century. The fact that it is not on an important road, that it didn't appear on historical map didn't ring a bell. There was no document that ever talk about the bridge, for instance because it would have needed repairs at some time and thus money. So much people believe that it was a medieval bridge that there were road's directions to go to this "13th century bridge".
In fact the bridge was built in 1836 to experiment a water wheel. Later the departement ask the bridge to carry a road and to be made public. Note that there are 2 visible arches but also 2 other in the building on the side.

As the Pont Neuf in Paris, the Pont Neuf in Toulouse is the oldest bridge of the city. It was constructed between 1544-1632 (yes almost 100 years to finished). In 1875 there was a very important flood. The flood was so important that the arches were under water but thanks to the "degueuloir" (still don't know the english name) the bridge didn't suffer.

Conques is one of the most beautiful city I ever see. Don't miss St. Foy abbey-church.
When walking on the path to Santiago, you leave the city by this nice old bridge. It was built in 1410 but there must have been an older bridge at this place. You can walk alongside the river or even in it because the river doesn't have much water and you can go almost under the bridge.

Bourgonne is one Region I never went but it has some nice bridges.

The Saint-Laurent bridge is located between Saint-Laurent and Mâcon and it crosses the Saône river. I don't know when it was build/repaired because depending on the sources it is the 11th century and/or 14th century. Maybe there was an older bridge from the 11th century that was destroyed and this bridge dates back to the 14th or maybe the work in the 14th century was only heavy works. What I'm sure is that in the end of the 18th century it was widened by 8m.
They wanted to destroyed the bridge because it was to small to allow boats on the river. In 1980 they built a canal around Saint-Laurent to save the bridge.

The Paul Bert bridge in auxerre was built by the king Saint Louis in the 13th century. It was massively transformed in the middle of the 19th century. On a platform, in the middle of the bridge, there is a statue of Paul Bert.

The Vieux Pont ("old bridge") at La-Charité-sur-Loire was built in 1520. In the 17th century they rebuilt the bridge but a problem occurred. The engineer ask the the society that do the building to destroy and restart building some parts because they were not correct. However the society pretended that the engineer didn't give them precise documents. This problem went up to Colbert -- the equivalent of the Prime ministry. At least Colbert (prime minister) say that the building society were right: you cannot construct something perfectly if you have no hints on how it should be.

Do you remember the Arcueil aqueduct (see post 17)? You have 4 aqueduct that bring water to Paris from the south. The newest one, the Aqueduc de la Vanne, brings water from the Vanne river in Bourgonne. You have some more bridges on this aqueduct, for example near Sens (more exactly between Chigy and Saligny).

The old railway bridge of Port-Aubry is one of the longest truss bridge of France. It opened in 1893. At first it was a double track line but in 1950 they remove one track. In 2000, the line closed to traffic.

I can't give you much informations on today's bridge. I don't even know its name. This railway bridge in Never must have opened around 1850 since the line opened in 1850.

This week: Auvergne!

On the transversal line lyon-Bordeaux, near Gannat, you find the Viaduc de Neuvial. It was one of the first bridge by Gustave Eiffel (even before the Maria Pia bridge in Porto). It opened in 1869.
Less than 2km away from the Neuvial viaduct you have another viaduct by Eifel: the Rouzat viaduct. I will show the Rouzat viaduct later. I like the Neuvial viaduct because it is quit simple and elegant.
