Today, we are in Corsica. The idea of the Zaglia bridge dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. However they built it only in 1797. It allows Shepherds to cross the Tavulella.

Let's go back to the Réunion Island.
The Route des Tamarins is a new expressway in La Réunion (it opened in 2009). It is exeptional by the number of great bridge on its 34km. I decided to show you the Viaduc de la Grande Ravine. It is 288m long and 170m hight. I liked how it look, almost flying over the gap.

Ajaccio (in Corsica) was built for a purely defensive reason. Since its birth, there was always the problem of water. In 1864-1878, the second empire built the Gravona canal to bring water to the city. Note that the water from the Gravona river is not proper for drinking but was used for domestic usage. Of the many bridges on the aqueduct, I only show you the one in Mezzavia.

Today I present you the bridge (or should I said bridges) of the Saint-Étienne river near Saint Louis de la Réunion. First there was a railway bridge built around 1880. However the line can be closed in winter due to heavy rain. They added a pedestrian path alongside the bridge. The line closed in 1956 and they sold the metal of the bridge.
For other traffic, they used a submersible road that was of course closed in winter and was flood away many times. In the middle of the 20th century they built a road bridge upstream and closed the submersible road.
In 1993 they used the masonry piers of the railway bridge (elevated with concrete) to built a twin of the road bridge. In 2007 the Gamède cyclone destroyed it. As you can see on googlemap or on some of the pics they built a temporary submersible road on the west of the bridge. They are now building a new bridge.
The foundations of the piers of the upstream bridge (and of the old downstream bridge) go only 3m deep. However, for the new bridge the foundations are going to be 35m deep! They are doing this to avoid problems during floods. The new bridge is planed to open in April 2013 (however it will completely open in September).
The new bridge will take all the car traffic of the national road (it will be a 2x2 road) while they will use the old upstream bridge for urban transportation and local traffic.

Corsica, Réunion, Corsica, réunion... quit boring. Let's go to Martinique.
The La Falaise bridge in the small city of Ajoupa-Bouillon is a french historical monument. Why did they decide that, I can't tell. It seems not to be an important bridge both architecturally or historically. It was built around 1930 or 1940 to cross the Falaise river. I don't know when or why, but it is no longer used, the road crosses the river on a new curvy bridge.
I was not able to find more photos than this one. This bridge will remain a mystery for me

Today, three bridges: the Vecchio bridges. To go from Ajaccio to Bastia in Corsica, you can use either the RN193 or the small metric gauge train.
The first road bridge was built in 1827 and enlarged in 1960. However trunk traffic damaged the bridge and they built a new one in 1999. The railway bridge also called Eiffel bridge was built by the Eiffel society in 1890-1892. It is 170m long and 80m hight.

Lol three bridges, great find. I remember them, though. I've seen a TV program about trains in Corsica some months ago.

Hehe, thanks. My problem when I decided to do one week in DOM-TOM was too many bridges in the Reunion island so I included also Corsica which has some really amazing bridges.
By the way, thanks for the Langeais Bridge.

So for me, this week I wanted to return in the east of France with the Franche-Comté with first the Morez viaducts.

On the Andelot-en-Montagne - La Cluse rail line you have the small city of Morez. On one side of the city you are at 860m hight on the other at 730m. This leads to the construction of a loop tunnel and some viaducts. All these viaducts were built by Paul Séjourné in 1900 or 1912 depending on the section of the line.

The Pont de la Pyle was built in 1966/67 when they built the Vouglans dam. They also destroyed the old bridge because it would have been under the water.

The Savoureuse viaduct on the HSR line Rhin-Rhone was built in 2011. Trains can cross it at 350 km/h. It is 700m long and it crosses 1 expressway, 1 national road, the Savoureuse river and the canal of upper-Saône. I really like what they did for the piers.

As you can check, each week you had either an aqueduct bridge or a canal bridge but it was a bit hard to find a "water bridge" in Franche-Comté. I don't know any aqueduct that needed a bridge, even though there are/were some nice aqueduct in this region. So I decided to show you this canal bridge in Bermont because of the history of the canal.
After the loss of Alsace-Lorraine in 1870, the french decided to do some work to connect the Vosges. In particular they decided to construct the upper-Saône canal. Only one third of it is finished (after the victory in 1918 and the return of Alsace-Lorraine, it was no longer needed). On the 23km of the canal you have 2 tunnels (2km in total), 14 locks and 9 canal-bridges (included this one).

localisation:

Bonus: they also built a nice lake to have enough water. Impressive dam!
