The purpose of the museum is not to show Germany anything and that Gdansk is Polish is evident, no insecurity there. The mission of the museum is to show the world the human suffering WWII caused from various perspectives, especially the Polish one....and hopefully the pointless insanity that war is. There will even be an exhibit on Stalingrad as well as of course the site of the worst ethnic cleansing (after holocaust) and destruction Warsaw. What interests me is that it will have tens of thousands of actual exhibits and documents versus the interactive computerized type so trendy of late.

I do agree it is a brute of a building, but I suppose this expresses the brutal nature of war how it can loom over the most civilized and beautiful places like Gdansk. In this sense the juxtaposition is quite interesting, kind of like I M Pei's pyramid at the Louvre.

Imposing structure. Any idea what the facade of the main building will be made of? Copper? Rusted steel? The latter would probably have a thematic appeal.

It seems though that the museum is a very strong concrete message of reminder to Germany that this is where WW2 started and that Gdansk is now Polish. It will be interesting to see how the interior looks, how the war is interpreted, as well as the immediate post war period which is also important.
I will use my same quote on the topic.

A History studied is a History remembered.
A History censored is a History forgotten, and possibly soon repeated!

I saw it in person, very impressive. The design metaphors are provocative. Looking forward to visiting soon.

I could not disagree more. This doesn't look cheap at all and I find the overall design, as well as the choice of material absolutely great.

And I hope that the people responsible for the content of this museum are not going for this cheap revisionist, hurray patriotic collection of exaggerated nationalism, which I would expect from the current government, but instead focus on what war and especially a great war means on a human scale. Its not at all a heroic national struggle but in reality it is blood, misery, brutality, mutilation, rape of women, country and culture ... even for those who were fighting on the "right side". For those on the other side, things were even worse.

Those who don't show that true face of war are complicit in working already on the next one.

That is one ugly museum, especially in contrast to the nearby historic architecture.

war is brutal, can't imagine a WWII museum rendered in a neo-classical style.
