Queensland is eager to showcase its tourism potential to DINKS (dual income, no kids) households, students and event organisers.

Paul Buggy, International Director, Tourism Queensland (the agency responsible for marketing the State’s tourism potential) for India, West Asia and Korea, said visitors from India have grown at a compound annual growth of 7.5 per cent since 2010, aided by business networking, consumer and trade events.

Queensland has seen a 15 per cent growth in arrivals from India this year, said Buggy, at an annual trade roadshow in the city.

The tradeshow, part of a multi-city tour, featured representatives from island resorts, wildlife and theme parks, hotel chains and rainforest retreats, tour operators and airlines.

The participants included Marriott Hotels, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Kingfisher Bay Resort, Cairns Tropical Zoo, Gold Coast Tourism and TOGA Hospitality.

Pharmexcil to conduct intl business meet on sidelines of IPC to expand business opportunities of Indian exporters
Peethaambaran Kunnathoor, Chennai

Quote:
With a view to help the pharma exporters and manufacturers, especially the SME pharma companies from the South, to expand their business opportunities into overseas markets, the Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) will organise an International Business Meet from December 7 to 9 in Chennai on the sidelines of the 64th Indian Pharmaceutical Congress (IPC).

The meet will be conducted at the SRM University campus with the active cooperation of Indian Pharmaceutical Congress Association (IPCA), consisting of IPA, IPGA, IHPA, APTI and AIDCOC. It is expected that the business congress will help increase India’s pharmaceutical exports in 2012-13.

“This is a great opportunity for the pharma manufacturers of Tamil Nadu and those attending the Indian Pharmaceutical Congress (IPC) to meet and interact with exporters and importers from various parts of the country and from abroad on one platform. The main objective of the business meet is to provide opportunity for the Indian pharma exporters, particularly from SME sector, to meet about 40 prominent buyers, drug regulatory officials and government procurement agencies of different countries across the globe,” said Dr P V Appaji, director general of the Pharmexcil.

About 40 delegates from major countries in the Latin American Countries (LAC), Commonwealth Independent States (CIS), ASEAN, Africa, Europe and Oceania will be invited to the meet to interact with the exporters and manufacturers of Indian pharmaceutical sector. But more emphasize will be given on meeting with the buyers and the programmes are conveniently divided into four sessions, he added.

When contacted, the organising secretary of IPC this year J Jayaseelan said the Pharmexcil’s business meet will definitely help the exporters and the small scale pharma manufacturers of Tamil Nadu. All the manufacturers can meet international buyers and sellers at one place and think of how to expand their business into the global markets. The meet will also highlight India’s strength to supply quality generic medicines at affordable prices, he pointed out.

The organisers of the business meet feel that the meet will help exchange updated information on drug regulatory procedures in India and other countries. Further, commercial and technical cooperation among countries can be increased.

Prominent buyers / importers of pharmaceutical products from different countries, FDA officials and pharma consultants from India will attend the Pharmexcil event. The business sessions in the Congress will cover discussions on Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), Formulations, Biotech & Biological Products, Ayush products, veterinary drugs, R&D, clinical trials, contact manufacturing and pharma related services.

Thinksoft felicitates its cadre of specialists

Quote:
In their book Deep Smarts: how to Cultivate and Transfer Enduring Human Wisdom”, (Harvard Business School Press , 2005) , Dorothy Leonard & Walter Swap have described how to create “Deep smarts”, people with knowledge , expertise, experience and specialized skills.

The authors feel that such expertise cannot be created, transferred or replicated quickly. Technology, formal learning and pedagogy have limited use in this process. Neither does it happen on its own through serendipity. Expertise develops continuously all the time - at work, play, at the water cooler, in the canteen, anytime, anywhere. Deep smarts need to be deliberately nourished and grown with dedication.

Thinksoft Global Services Ltd, an 750 plus strong, Chennai headquartered specialist software testing firm, celebrated and recognized its long serving employees. At a function held in The Leela Palace, Chennai on 23rd Nov’12, 149 of its employees were appreciated with “Long Service Awards”. The award winners were present with their family members, to receive the awards. Every year there are some surprise elements planned for the event, and this year it was a speed painter, Mr. Vilas Nayak who came up with the on the spot portraits of the 10 year service award winners.

Mr. D. Nandkishore, EVP, Thinksoft, said: “it is only by consciously designing our own experience and deliberate practices and learning can we create sustainable ladders of expertise”.

Mr. R. Srinivasan, President, Europe and Asia business, Thinksoft, said “As specialists organization, it is critical for Thinksoft to have a pool of experts who can establish the credibility unfailingly in each and every assignment and make the organization clearly stand apart from the bevy of generalists as value providers. “

Ms. Aarti Arvind, EVP, Thinksoft, expressed “We are very happy that these employees have understood the value of expertise and stayed for long haul to build this and there by growing our business”.

Mr. S. Anand, Head-HR, Thinksoft, emphasized “that more than a third of the employees were with the firm for more than 5 years and nearly a fifth of them have completed 7 years which is a good sign, in todays churning job markets”.

Event aims at increased exposure to opportunities in the South
Chennai, Dec. 3:

Power PitchFest, a TiECON Chennai initiative, provided 48 start-up entrepreneurs the opportunity to pitch for funding from potential investors.

The event brought together entrepreneurs and investors for interactions, said Lakshmi Narayanan, President, TiE Chennai, and Vice- Chairman, Cognizant Technology Solutions.

The event was targeted at highlighting the development of an early stage entrepreneurial eco-system in Tamil Nadu. It was meant to increase the exposure of venture investors across the country to opportunities available to them in South. The event provided entrepreneurs mentoring and guidance on how best to represent themselves while raising funds.

PitchFest 2012 received applications from over 200 entrepreneurs across sectors such as agriculture, e-commerce, education, energy, food, healthcare, infrastructure, information technology, retail and transportation. After an initial screening, the list was pruned to 48 companies.

The final participants received personalised assistance from individual mentors to tweak their fund-raising pitch, said Rajan Srikanth, Chairman and Managing Director, SmartKapital, and Chairman, PitchFest 2012. The appetite for money from start-ups ranged between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 10 crore, he told newspersons.

As a final step, the PitchFest participants were matched with two-three investors attending PitchFest. A total of 28 investors, including ten venture capital firms, participated in the event, he said.

According to V.T. Bharadwaj, Managing Director, Sequoia Capital, sponsor of PitchFest, there were a number of start-up companies whose founders had six-seven years work experience and now wanted to start their own ventures.

Laurus Edutech to set up 540 centres for vocational training

Developing skills: (From left) Srinivas Rao Cheedella, Managing Director, Laurus Edutech; K. Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu; and Mohan Pyare, Principal Secretary, Department of Labour and Employment, Government of Tamil Nadu, at the launch of Skill India Partner Program of Laurus Edutech, in Chennai on Monday. – Bijoy Ghosh

Chennai, Dec 10:
Quote:
The Chennai-based Laurus Edutech Pvt Ltd, a partner for the National Skills Development Council, plans to set up 540 skill development centres for vocational training.

These centres will be set up across the country under the Skill India Partner Programme (SIPP).

Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah today launched this programme.

The SIPP acts like an extended arm of NSDC in jointly setting up skill development centres with the industry. The training will be given to school drop-outs, or those who could not pursue higher education, in areas like welding and construction. This will make such students employable and enable them to earn a monthly salary ranging from Rs 7,000 to Rs 12,000, he said.

Out of the 540 centres, nearly 330 centres would be set up jointly with the industry, Srinivas Rao Cheedella, Managing Director, Laurus Edutech, told at the launch function.

Each vocational training centre needs to have a local flavour and choice of skills to be trained. Laurus will bring in its expertise in training students and trainers, assessments, and technology.

It will also assist the partners in choosing the location, planning the courses to be delivered, developing the infrastructure, hiring trainers and developing faculty, acquiring a steady student base, and building the centre’s brand, he said.

Laurus has signed up with companies such as DLF Foundation, Tata Motors, Naturals and Ador Weldings, he said.
