Ruse-The Danubian Pearl of Bulgaria

Hello all! I would like to present my hometown Ruse. It's the 5-th largest city in Bulgaria and the largest city and biggest port on the Danube river in my country. Ruse is also the second largest city in northern Bulgaria. It's population is apx. 150 000. Ruse is the administrative center of the Ruse Province and the center of the North-Central Planning Region of Bulgaria.

Here is the location of the city on he Bulgarian map.

I will start off with the cityscape as seen from one of the hotels on the Danube - Riga hotel.

And the cityscape from the opposite side of the city - watching towards the Danube and the neighbouring Romanian city Giurgiu.

One of the neigbourhoods with mostly modern residential buildings. And her majesty - The Danube.

Next photos are from the cenrtal city square - Svoboda (Liberty) Square. On the first photo you can see the Monument of Liberty, projected in the beginning of the XX century by the Italian sculptor Arnoldo Zocchi. With the time this has become the symbol of the city and it is in the coat of arms of Ruse. On the background there is the theater of Ruse. Probably the most beautiful building in Ruse.

The Monument of Liberty with the theater in the back again.

Fireworks on the celebrations of the 100-th anniversary since the construction of the monument. From this photo you can tell how much we respect our symbol.

And now it's time for the theater.

To be continued...

The next building that I am going to introduce you to is the Opera House. It has been recently renovated. The fountain is from the so-called dry fountains, so everyone that wishes may walk around the water. Later on with the thread I am going to post here a video with the fountains of Ruse.

Svoboda Square looking towards the opposite side. The big building on the left is the Court House of Ruse.

This place is known locally as "The Clock". Many young couples arrange their first dates here. Beside that. From the historic point of view, this is the building of the first private bank in Bulgaria - Girdap.

The theater again.

The Opera House before the renovation. On her right you can see the Sveta Troitsa church (I think in English it would be Saint Trinity?). The biggest part of the church is underground.

More to come..

3 winter photos.
The tower and the figure are from the theater again.

These are the two lions that rest in front of the Monument of Liberty. The one with the broken chains symbolises the broken chains of slavery and the other protects the sword and shield of freedom, that are being hold by the lady on the top of the monument. Her name is believed to be Aristinia, and she points the direction from which came the liberation army.

A sneak peak to one of the next buildings that I will show you later - The Regional Library.

That's from me for know. Tonight I will post a lot more photos.

In front - Ruse TV Tower. Until 2001, this is the tallest TV tower on the Balkans with it's 204m. On the background - downtown Ruse.

Overview of Svoboda Square.

And some of the surroundings of the city.

If you look closely, you can see the TV tower sticking on this one.

We move on to Batenberg Square, where are located several important for the city buildings. First off is the Regional Historical Museum. A former residence of kniaz (maybe prince in English?) Batenberg.

And the Regional Library on the name of Liuben Karavelov - one of Bulgaria's biggest national heroes. He found his death in Ruse.

Still on Batenberg Square. This is the monument of the fallen heroes in the Serbo-Bulgarian war.

And one of the beautiful buildings on one of the corners.

Borisova boulevard from downtown side.

And from the side of the railway station.

The same boulevard, somewhere in it's middle.

Good job, neighbour !

I wish (wishful thinking !) that an economic and cultural European city be planned around Ruse and Giurgiu, because they can be reached from Bucharest (2 million people) in 1 hour.

Access on the Danube is a great advantage, industrial output can be moved down to the Black Sea or up towards Budapest, Vienna and the North Sea.

Together they have 230,000 in population.

Now, the historic centre of Russe can be a great place for Bucharestians to spend a week-end. Add the Danube and the possibility of eating fish...Etc.

If built, we could also have working places, increase industrial production, and from my point of view, Bucharest could be relieved from the burden of urbanisation (Bucharest is overcrowded), and for both countries it would be a great cooperation experience in the field of economy, tourism, transportation, accesibility, etc.

Greetings, neighbour!

Indeed the relations between Ruse and Giurgiu are strengthening more and more with every year. In August there was a press conference in Ruse, on which it was discussed the upcoming master plan for the euroregion Ruse-Giurgiu. In it are planned several very important projects. One of them is to be created a second bridge over the Danube connecting Ruse with Giurgiu. Another is a high-speed train between the two cities as well as a united tram-system (I don't know how is the situation in Romania, but in Bulgaria the only city with trams is Sofia) so this would be a remarkable one for us. And last but not least - there are plans for a huge automotive plant. The investor is yet to choose whether to invest in Ruse or Giurgiu. On the meeting, the mayor said that it will be in eastern industrial zone of Ruse but I'm not sure whether this is absolutely sure or not. In Bulgaria, there are rumors that the plant will be Volkswagen's with productivity of around 120 000 cars a year.

Cheers!

This is one of the socialist residential buildings in downtown Ruse. The architectural style is the so called "Stallin-Barock"
