Trump Tower

Here is a quick and dirty model of the Trump Tower I did over the weekend. I didn't take the time to highlight or score the window patterns, as it was just a fun little project meant to keep me busy on Sunday. I quite like how the trees on the atrium turned out, along with the "gold" lobby.

I've been working on 17 State Street this week. I should have some pics tomorrow.

Me too. Last time I was in NYC back in June, I took a lovely nap on Governors Island, in the shadow of Lower Manhattan, and 17 State Street was the first thing I saw when I awoke.

Wow it's amazing! I love it! How much does it measure?

Where are you from?

It's the same scale as the rest of my models, so it comes out to just under 10 inches tall.

I'm originally from Ozone Park, Queens, but I moved out to LA with my folks about 13 years ago. I go back to NYC every 6 months or so, to visit family and just detox.

I just noticed you can't see the crown on top in the pics, but I assure you its there.

Here's a pic I took when I woke up from that nap. What a great day that was. One of the best naps of my life!

This weekend's project will be 40 Wall Street. The facade should take a good while to complete

I just remembered that I haven't taken any shots of my One Times Square. I'll get some this weekend.

One Times Square

Here is my model of One Times Square (aka the old New York Times Building, aka Allied Chemical Building). Its around 7-8 inches tall including the pole on top. I took the liberty of swapping out most of the billboards for ones of my own choosing, except of course the mainstays like the Toshiba, Samsung and Chevrolet clock. The ball is just a crumpled ball of aluminium foil, with some paint splattered on to it, and the pole is a coffee stirrer straw painted silver.

I wired up 3 multicolour LEDs on the base, and 1 on the roof. They each flash in random colours and patterns independent of each other, so it gives the building a frenetic flashy Times Square-esque feeling.

Nice! Did you try with SMD Leds? I think it exists in color, or maybe using a filter... It could be more realistic with more inconspicuous LEDs.

I'd really like too see pics while your making your models to know how you do it!

I haven't tried the SMD ones, I got these because they were dirt cheap. 20 for $4 or something. They do appear pretty large in the photos, but due to my "skyline" being on top of my 6.5' tall tv console, you can't see the bulbs unless you check it out on eye-level.

Funny you should ask about in-progress photos. I started my 40 Wall Street project this weekend. The first pic is on Saturday just after completing the main structure and window strips. The second is the beginning stages of the facade construction on Sunday.

What is your scale?

I use a clear tacky Craft Glue, I'll get you the name of it tomorrow. As for foam board, I use regular plain white sheets in 3/16 or 2/16 width, and plain white poster board, depending on need. Other assorted tools include a box cutter, exacto knife, scissors, non-slip ruler in 12" length, and an 18" clear ruler for the bigger projects.

My scale is pretty strange and I came about it completely by accident. When I was doing my first project, the old WTC, I just decided to make them 2 feet tall. So when I finished them, and decided to build others in scale, I divided their final height by the actual height they were in reality, which left me with a scale of 55.55 ft per inch. Its a decent scale for my purposes, although it tends to be a bit difficult fitting in as much detail as you can.

When planning out a project, I use height diagrams, various photos, and 3d models on Google Earth to map out a construction plan. I put all the real life measurements into a spreadsheet which automatically gives me the scale measurements in 1/8 inch increments, which I find easiest for me. I realise my measurements won't be 100%, but I'm not interested in winning any accuracy awards. Its just a fun hobby.
