GYEONGGI-DO | Projects & Construction

The current name for Gyeonggi Province was first used in the 11th century (1026). The Gyeonggi area of the Korean Peninsula has served as the capital region for more than a thousand years. It now plays a vital role in the politics, economy, and culture of Korea.
Korea is located in Northeast Asia, which is home to diverse economic activities. The region can be divided into four parts: north, west, east and central. To the north is Russia, where primary products such as timber and minerals are extracted. To the west, northeastern China, is home to agriculture, light industry and manufacturing. To the east, Japan, has become the leader in a vast array of advanced industries that have been moving offshore to more cost-efficient locations. In the center is Korea, and the center of Korean business and industry is the capital city Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. Most industries, from agriculture to information technology, can be found in this area.
Gyeonggi Province is located in the west-central area of the Korean Peninsula and surrounds the Korean capital of Seoul. Situated between 126° and 127° east longitude and between 36° and 38° north latitude, Gyeonggi Province enjoys a temperate climate. It is bordered to the north by the 38th parallel and to the west by the Yellow Sea. Gyeonggi Province is divided into northern and southern halves by the Han River, which flows through the province from east to west. The northeastern area is mountainous while the southwestern area consists of wide plains. The area of Gyeonggi Province is 10,189㎢, accounting for approximately 10.2% of the total land area of South Korea.

Project under construction in the city of Goyang, just West of Seoul, South Korea. The project is already well underway and scheduled for completion in 2016.

It consists of 6 towers. The official height hasn't been announced yet, but based on the floor count and the pictures, I'd say it's in the 220-230 meter range. We'll know more once the buildings are completed.

Building 103 : 59 floors
Building 105 : 59 floors
Building 102 : 58 floors
Building 104 : 59 floors
Building 106 : 57 floors
Building 101 : 55 floors

A number of global retail brands have opened up stores in the newly built Pangyo Hyundai Department Store in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, which held its grand opening Friday.

Global apparel company Uniqlo, Switzerland-based coffee machine brand Nespresso, as well as Esteem -- a cafe which sells drinks from U.S. coffee brand Intelligentsia Coffee and France’s Palais de Thes -- are among some 900 shops housed inside the mega shopping mall.

Uniqlo is holding opening day promotions from Friday to Sunday, offering discounts on a number of items including flannel shirts, women’s blouses and men’s sweatshirts, as well as gifts for a number of customers.

At Nespresso, customers can directly purchase 23 varieties of the brand’s flagship capsule coffee, coffee machines and accessories. Coffee consulting and free tasting opportunities are available as well.

Esteem, the biggest coffee store inside the department store by size, will offer new menus from the two Western brands that will differ by season.

Beginning of Construction of K-Culture Valley

K-Culture Valley has started construction in the new city of Ilsan (near KINTEX), in the city of Goyang, just North-West from Seoul. It is part of the greater Hallyu World project

CJ breaks ground on K-Culture Valley project

President Park Geun-hye listens to CJ Chairman Sohn Kyung-shik explain the K-Culture Valley project at its ground-breaking ceremony in Goyang, north of Seoul on Friday. A complex the size of 46 football stadiums will open in December next year.

CJ broke ground Friday on a gigantic complex devoted to Korean pop cultural content in Goyang, Gyeonggi, which is to be completed in December 2017.

“K-Culture Valley” will have a theme park, a 2,000-seat K-pop concert hall, a traditional Korean-style hotel with 400 rooms and a shopping mall on a 326,000-square-meter plot near Kintex - the size of 46 football stadiums combined.

The conglomerate, a leader in both the entertainment and food industries, announced at a ground-breaking ceremony that it will spend 1.4 trillion won ($1.2 billion) on the project, 40 percent more than its original budget.

“One of key growth engines of Korea will be the industrializing of Korean culture through creative content,” said President Park Geun-hye at the ceremony.

She cited the hugely popular Korean drama “Descendants of the Sun” as a successful example of Korean cultural content contributing to the national economy.

“The drama itself posted 10 billion won in export deals, but also led Korean businesses to ship a range of products featured in it - worth 1 trillion won,” Park said.

Meant to introduce 5,000 years of Korean history - from the period of the Three States (Samguk) to the Joseon Empire - the theme park will consist of six different zones.

Unlike ordinary theme parks that are equipped with rides, the six themed zones will make the most out of Korean dramas, films and music to allow visitors to experience Hallyu, or the Korean wave of pop culture, with the help of cutting-edge technologies such as holograms, augmented reality and virtual reality.

For instance, a tourist may become Admiral Yi Sun-shin and lead warships into the historic Battle of Myeongnyang against the Japanese navy through a 4-D video. That experience will be based on the popular 2014 historical epic “The Admiral: Roaring Currents.”

The ministry anticipates the valley will create 56,000 new jobs and 8.7 trillion won worth of economic impact in its first five years after its opening next year. Annual visitors are forecast at 5 million.

With an ambition to form a cultural ecosystem, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has been launching a series of establishments since early last year.

The Hallyu-centered project began with the opening of the Culture Creative Convergence Center at the CJ E&M Sangamdong Center in western Seoul last April. The K-Culture Valley is set to round off the grand plan.

Opening of Starfield Hanam

Shinsegae bets big on Starfield Hanam

Shoppers tour Starfield Hanam, southeast of Seoul, during a pre-opening event, Monday. Shinsegae and Taubman invested a combined 1 trillion won ($910 million) to open Korea's largest shopping mall by floor space. Starfield Hanam will officially open its door on Friday. / Yonhap

By Lee Hyo-sik

Shinsegae is betting big on Starfield Hanam, the so-called shopping-themed entertainment park, southeast of Seoul, to outdo its archrival Lotte amid the prolonged domestic consumption slump.

Starfield Hanam, the nation's largest shopping complex by floor space, aims to attract shoppers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province where more than half of Korea's 52 million people reside, according to Shinsegae officials, Monday.

They say the mall will earn more than 820 billion won (745 million) in sales during its first year, adding that Shinsegae will open more such facilities in the coming years, nurturing the Starfield brand as its new growth engine.

"Starfield Hanam has everything that shoppers are looking for in one place," Yim Young-rok, vice president of Shinsegae Property, which oversees the mall's operations, said during a pre-opening event. "We have a department store, luxury brand shops, an electronics store, automobile showrooms, a water park, a cinema, a food court and many more places that enable us to provide a great shopping experience."

It is built on an 118,000 square-meter site in Hanam, Gyeonggi Province, housing 750 brands, ranging from fashion and cosmetics to food and electronics. Its floor space totals 460,000 square meters, the largest among shopping centers in Korea.

"In addition, Starfield Hanam can accommodate about 6,200 vehicles at once," Yim said. "The mall has convenient access to nearby expressways and multiple local roads, making it easier for 4.3 million people residing within 20 kilometers to come and enjoy its state-of-the-art facilities."

It will attract more than 12 million visitors annually, including Chinese and Japanese tourists, the vice president said, adding that it has created more than 5,000 new jobs.

Using the success of Starfield Hanam, Shinsegae and its business partner Taubman, the U.S.-based shopping mall developer, plan to build two more shopping complexes, in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, and Cheongna International City in Incheon.

Shinsegae has a 51-percent stake in Starfield Hanam and Taubman the remaining 49 percent.

"I am glad to witness the successful opening of Starfield Hanam," said Peter Degalan, chief investment officer at Taubman Asia. "We are proud to be Shinsegae's partner in creating this wonderful shopping mall. Shinsegae came to us first because Hanam City required it to find a foreign investor for the construction of a large-scale shopping center. We made the right decision to be involved in this project."

Degalan said Taubman has not decided yet whether to invest in the planned Starfield malls. "We are still talking with Shinsegae about our further commitments to the upcoming Starfield malls. I believe that the Starfield brand will lead Korea's shopping trend and offer a new experience for local consumers."
Nice video that shows what the mall will have to offer and an aerial view as well at the end
