St. Helena Airport Construction Well Under Way

Despite logistical challenges, construction of the airport on the remote island of St Helena, in the Atlantic Ocean, is well under way. This is according to South African Construction Company Basil Read project director Jimmy Johnston.

The JSE-listed group was awarded the $245million contract by the British government to design, build and operate the airport. After construction in, 2015, the operations phase of the airport would continue in partnership with South Africa-based Lanseria Airport for a further ten years at an estimated contract value of $55million.

Construction started in May 2012, but Johnston explained that it had only been establishment work to prepare for official construction to get under way. He added that Basil is now in the final stages of completing the mobilisation phase of the project, and the works will shortly be entering the full and intensive construction phase.

Which airlines have expressed interest in serving the airport? It's great to see the government finally investing in the Overseas Territories I just wish we could see civilization of ASI, which would really help get St. Helena started.

I wonder if this will spur moves towards a STOL strip on Pitcairn? A Twin Otter or Islander service from Pitcairn to Mangareva would be a real game changer.
