I should start with what is considered the heart of the city and I think this is University Square. All these photos and the next ones I will post today are made yesterday.

University Square

Is named like that because in this square stands the University of Bucharest, founded in 1864. The present buildings are from 1869 and a wing rebuilt after the 1944 bombings. The building has a plan as a rounded rectangle, with a courtyard.

These are one of the corners (the one where the Maths Faculty is) and the courtyard.

Next to the University of Bucharest is the University of Architecture and Urbanism "Ion Mincu". The School of Architecture was founded in 1892 as a private school. From 1897 has became a branch of School of Belle-Arteand in 1904 has became an independent institution. The old part of the building was designed by Grigore Cherkez and built between 1912-1927. The new corp was added in the 1960s. First picture: the front to the Bălcescu Boulevard. Second picture: the entrance (the new corp) recently redesigned. Third picture: the new corp of the building and Edgar Quinet Street separating it from the University of Bucharest.

Academy Street which crosses Edgar Quinet passing next to the Architecture University, than next to Bucharest University. At its end, the palace of the National Bank is seen (presented later)

Bălcescu - Magheru Avenue

This wide boulevard between University and Roman Squares is bordered by appartment-blocks built between wars (1930s-1940s) in Modernist style. During that time was the most modern part of Bucharest and today is one of Bucharesterers favorite throughouts for walking and shopping. It's about 2 km long and its continued to the south (across the University Square) with Brătianu Avenue ending in Unification Square and to the north (across the Roman Square) with Barbu Catargiu Boulevard which ends in Victory Square.

In the second picture, a part of InterContinental Hotel appears (built in 1970, 77 m tall).

Calea Victoriei / Victory Avenue

This is Bucharest's most famous and fashionable street.

Initially, the road was named Drumul Braşovului (Braşov Road), being part of the trade route between Bucharest and the city of Braşov, in Transylvania. After that, during Constantin Brâncoveanu's rule (1688-1714) was renamed Podul Mogoșoaiei because it was linking the center of the city with the Mogoșoaia Palace, his luxurious residence some 10 km north of Bucharest.

The area surrounding the road became the most fashionable part of Bucharest: 35 boyar houses were located on the road itself in 1775.

Podul Mogoşoaiei was the first street in Bucharest to be illuminated with candles during the night, starting July 1814.

The road was renamed "Calea Victoriei" on October 12, 1878, following the Romanian victory in the Independence War of 1877-1878.

Was the site of the old Romanian National Theater (built in 1852 and destroyed by WW2 bombings); the departed theatre's façade is replicated by the front of the Bucharest Novotel that opened in summer 2006.

The Royal Palace, situated in what is named now Revolution Square (formerly Palace Square), was also on Victory Avenue, as well as the Romanian Athenaeum, finest 19th century building in Bucharest.

Calea Victoriei was Bucharest's showpiece street in the Interwar years. Tudor Octavian wrote, "this is how the whole of Bucharest would look if we had been allowed…, if its builders had been clever enough…"

The variety of architectural forms of the buildings along the boulevard is amazing. I took only few shots, in future photo raids I will cover more.

The first picture is taken from Constantin Mille Street, which continues across the Victory Avenue with Edgar Quinet (previously presented).

On the right side is the Hotel Capitol (built in 1901) and across the boulevard is Casa Capșa, a famous historical restaurant founded in 1852. It was the favorite place of meeting for the writers, actors as well as for other personalities from 1891 (when the coffee house was opened) and up to 1948, when communists closed it.

Calea Victoriei and the entrance to Hotel Capitol

Hotel Novotel (right) finished in 2006, built on the place of former National Theatre. On the left, a part of Telephone Palace is seen.

Calea Victoriei between Telephone Palace and Casa Capșa

Revolution Square, also on the Calea Victoriei. It's perhaps the most elegant square of Bucharest, with the Royal Palace, the Athenaeum, the Central University Library, a precious 18th century church, none of which appears here.

Instead, I took a shot of the Senate Palace (1939-1950). Is named like that because it hosted the Romanian Senate between 1990-2005, when the Senators moved to the Palace of Parliament, joining their colleagues from the Chamber of Deputies. Now it hostes the Ministry of Heatlh (the wing in the picture) and the Ministry of the Interior.

The building in the second picture is called "Excelsior Center" and it hosts offices, shops and Excelsior Theatre.

Dâmbovița River

Is a 286 km long river that has its sources in the Făgăraş Mountains and flows into the Argeș River somwhere south of Bucharest.

For centuries, Dâmbovița was the main source of drinking water for the city of Bucharest. While there were a few dozen water wells, most of the water in Bucharest was distributed by water-carriers.[1]

Bucharest folkore mentions the waters of Dâmbovița as "sweet", and even at the beginning of the 18th century, Anton Maria del Chiaro considered it "light and clean". However, toward the end of the 18th century, as the population of Bucharest increased, the river ceased to be as clean.

It was sung in songs like one that says Dâmboviță, apă dulce, cin'te bea nu se mai duce (Sweet Dâmbovița, one who drinks your water stay here for ever, refering to the attractiveness of Bucharest).

Izvor Bridge and Buleandra Theatre. The theatre is the building on right.

Unification Square

Piața Unirii is one of the largest squares in Bucharest, located in the center of the city where Sectors 1, 2, 3, and 4 meet.

.

The square is a significant transport hub, containing the Piața Unirii metro station and a major interchange for RATB buses. The Unirea Shopping Center and a large taxi rank are located on the east side of this square, while Hanul lui Manuc is on the north side, near the northeast corner. The centre of the square boasts a small park and fountains.

Unification Avenue

Following the 1977 Vrancea earthquake, Bucharest's city center suffered significant damage, and a large number of historic buildings were demolished to make way for the new Centrul Civic (Civic Center). As part of the project, Bulevardul Unirii was to be Communist Romania's answer to Paris's Avenue des Champs-Élysées.

With 3,5 km and a width on 90 m, it surpassed the Parisian avenue (1,9 km long, 70 m wide).

Bulevardul Unirii is bordered by monumental commieblocks whose decorations imitate those of prewar buildings of Bucharest. In its middle, between the two senses, there thirty fountains with complicated sculptures and mosaic floors with various motifs (dolphins etc). In the middle of Unification Square is a monumental fountain (pictures in previous post).

Mihai Vodă Church and Apostles Church

These are two churches situated between Dâmbovița River and Constitution Square

Mihai Vodă Church. This a significant historical monument. Built in 1594 by Michael the Brave (Romanian ruler that unified for the first time the three Romanian provinces, Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania, in 1600). It was surrounded by a fortified cloister that over centuries was used as Princely Court, military hospital and up to 1985 the National Archives of Romania.

Being situated initially on the top of the hill where the Palace of Parliament now stands, it was decided to be demolished by communist power and the cloister was demolished in 1985. The church and belltower, initially decided to be demolished too, have been saved at the insistence of architects, art historians, the Orthodox patriarch and other intellectuals, being traslated on a distance of 289 m on its present place.

Bonus: historical pictures (one from 18th century, one from 1793 and one from between wars) of the monastery. Click to enlarge

Apostles Church

Situated close to the other church, this one is on its original location. First built in 16th century, it was rebuilt in present form in 1636.

National Bank of Romania

The National Bank Palace is situated between the streets Lipscani and Doamnei.

Built in 1880 on the place of a 17th century inn, the building helped to create a financial district in the city and reflected the orientation toward Western style modern at the time, the architects being formed at École de Beaux Arts of Paris.

The pictures are taken at the side on Doamnei Street. The round appartment building, formerly called the Adriatica Tower, was built in 1935.
