I know Tarlabaşı is a decay district of Istanbul, but this project is horrible!

Normal renovation would be better ;/ Without this demolition and modern accent.

Are any of the buildings of historic value?

yes, considering building stock of the area we can say there's many a century old buildings with historical value, but also non-historical buildings spread in the neighborhood. If they demolish them all I'd be shocked and anxious, this is not a renovation nor gentrification.More like plain demolishing and making a project from scratch under the mask of 'urban renovation'

Such an ugly project. They let certain houses deteriorate on purpose. Such as the white building in the previous photo. It had its originals windows and door and they just ripped them out exposing the house to wind and rain. Probably the original ceilings will be gone by now too.

So you take a historic street and butcher it and that is supposed to be good development?

Istanbul totally f*cks itself up, it's such a pity...
It could be the Rome of the East in many ways, but yeah, it's worsening actually.

Erdogan must be to blame.

Unsure about this - high chance of becoming a concrete wasteland if some of the original fine grain isn't preserved...

To be fair, I've seen a lot of facadism just as bad, if not worse, in Western Europe.

Still, it does looks like something a cultural vandal like Erdogan would support.
