Classic Architecture of Lithuania
Classic architecture of Lithuania
This thread is about classic architecture buildings from gothic to classicism styles in current Lithuania. Some words I would like to say of course about neo styles, but it will be later. You can feel free, anyone can add your own or other not bad photos. Arch. Styles in Lithuania Gothic (from (XIII)XIV-XVI c.) Renaissance(XVI-XVII) Baroque (XVII-XVIII) Classicism(XVIII-XIX) Gothic, Firstly about gothic castles in Lithuania Trakai island castle, built by famous lithuanian duke, not crowned Lithuania king Vytautas the Great in 1409. It was his main residence and most beautiful castle in all Grand Duchy of Lithuania. After 1655 catastrphic war against russians, cossacks and sweds this castle was destroyed. Rebuilt about 1984. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I don't think there is such a thing as a distinctively "Lithuanian" classical architecture. Perhaps, the only thing that could be called so are those numerous baroque era wooden churches in Samogitia, that are quite unique.
If you don't mind Depeched, i'll just jump straight to them. For those of you, who have no idea what Samogitia is:

Not only in Samogitia. Don't forget about churches in Aukštaitija region.Like this one in Palūšė, what was put on Lithuanian money and is the oldest surviving wooden church in Lithuania. wiki The church on Lithuanian money. ![]() wiki Labanoras church. wiki Also, there are (or were) more unique Lithuanian style buildings like wooden synagogues. ![]() Gothic tserkvas - Orthodox churches are quite unique phenomenon, as they there built, using Gothic style (Catholic style), but remodeled (adopted) to fit Orthodox needs. Of course, this is more regional thing, not only Lithuanian, but of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and was designated for Ruthenian people of the Duchy. We should not forget, that there were distinctive regional architectural schools - Vilnian Baroque is very different from the Polish, Austrian or German Baroque. ![]() Few examples of regional Vilnian Baroque School. Those timber Churches are absolutely beautiful. How authentic are they? I mean are they complete reconstructions or merely restorations?
