Wow..

Excellent work here, guys! Just my kind of pictures and just my kind of place!

Especially awewome are those "behind the facade" interiors. Just an awesome tour!

Does anyone know the name of the hotel where the nice bed with the fading frescoes in the back was taken?

My own photos

Paulava Republic in Minor Merkinė village in Vilnius area near Turgeliai town

Existed in 1769-1795, until Russia Empire occupation
Sometimes this place is called Lithuanian Monaco. It was real Republic in Both Nation Republic, Grand Duchy of Lithuania which was approved by the Both Nation Republic sejm.

Area: about 1640 hectares

Founder: Povilas Ksaveras Bžostovskis (pol. Paweł Ksawery Brzostowski)

Republic heritage reached our times in poor condition, the palace was burned during the Soviet period. But I think current view is still very impressive.

Old road from Turgeliai town to former Republic

View to Turgeliai church

Merkys river

Hotel Narutis on central street of the Old Town of Vilnius.
The building itself has many layers, from 15th century Gothic to late 19th century Eclectic.
The site of the hotel with some photos of the interiors: http://narutis.com/en/narutis-image-gallery/

From that hotel are those:

kpd.lt

Maybe this hotel would be not so interesting, but the frescoes. Also, interesting fact, that this hotel is situated in the same building, in the same walls
where the first known hotel (or a place for accommodation) of Vilnius was (maybe there were earlier hotels, we do not know).
That hotel is marked in the plan of the city of 1582 in "the atlas of the largest cities in the World" of the Georg Braun
(yeah, in that time it was very large city, now only half a million). This makes this hotel kind of one of the oldest hotels in the region.
Though I am not sure if it was a hotel always, for all these years or only for some periods.
Plan: http://rokiskis.popo.lt/files/2012/1..._litvaniae.jpg

From the page of the hotel.
Quote:
History
The Narutis Hotel, the oldest hotel in Vilnius and one of the oldest in Eastern Europe, is situated in the very heart of the Old town,
in a 16th-century building which was first recorded in the Book of World Cities, published in Cologne in 1581, as a place for an overnight stay.
In 1997, this 15th and 16th-century architectural treasure, with its harmonious unity of gothic, classical and historicist styles, was renovated
to such perfection that it set new standards for Vilnius’ Old Town.
The gothic cellars, which now house an acclaimed restaurant, were cleared down to the 16th-century floor level. The renovated courtyard,
complete with atrium and panoramic elevator, serves as an ideal venue for business meetings and relaxation.
And those classical frescoes are from the other hotel in the Old Town - Stikliai. That hotel is situated in Gothic style building from the 16th century.
Site of the hotel: http://www.stikliaihotel.lt/en/c2/

stikliaihotel.lt

Judging from the style, these are late 18th century or early 19th.

kpd.lt

kpd.lt

I like these frescoes from the bathroom of the same hotel.

kpd.lt

Also, talking about frescoes, more than half buildings in the Old Town of Vilnius from the outside, were decorated with frescoes in the
17th or 18th centuries, but later, in the 19th century, clean walls were more popular and most of these were covered with plaster. With every
year, more and more frescoes or fragments are uncovered. I am utterly waiting when the restorers will uncover huge frescoes on the outer side
of the St. Johns church, right behind the hotel Narutis. It is known, that 17 century frescoes, depicting plague are resting under the plaster.
But the interiors in the Old Town are especially rich in frescoes (most are too under the plaster). There are some works on uncovering of
the frescoes in the University of Vilnius right at the moment.
What to expect, we can see in many churches in Vilnius, where these frescoes are usually uncovered and visible.
Here just an example of what I was just talking about.

kpd.lt
The wall actually has face under the plaster in Vilnius.

Another case. Here restorers uncovered Gothic frescoes with German inscriptions. Here, on German street, Germans settled from the 14th century.

vsaa.lt

And here - Renaissance ornaments on Gothic warehouse.

vsaa.lt

Unfortunately, I was not able to find photos from the yard of the building, where the whole walls are decorated in such technique...

Now cool restaurant inside the warehouse building http://www.medininkai.lt/news/

Let's go to the cellar of the restaurant. One of the oldest cellars in Vilnius, 14th century.

vsaa.lt

vsaa.lt

Another example on Mannerism/Early Baroque palace of Radvilas.

vsaa.lt

Here interesting example. The wall on which the fresco is made is not flat, but oval. Not seen from the distance only from very close to the church.

vsaa.lt

Here, the wall of the building was covered with the portraits of the Bishops of Lithuania and Popes. More than 50 portrays. Now only one
is uncovered, others are waiting patiently.

vsaa.lt

Here, on the 16th century Renaissance gates of the city - Gates of Dawn, fresco of Jesus was uncovered.

vsaa.lt
On the left side, it seems like an angel, but not much left from this one.

Gates from the distance.

vsaa.lt

Only five years ago uncovered frescoes on the wall of Gothic Franciscan church (later covered with Baroque elements, Gothic mostly rests
under the plaster like frescoes on buildings).

vsaa.lt

Yap, again something under the plaster. Seems like rustication this time.

vsaa.lt

Here, on St. Michael's church, is seen how it probably looked, where such rustication was uncovered in 2009.

vsaa.lt
Um, do You see rustication? Poor quality photo.

And so on and many more. Hope I answered some questions.

It would be great to show the mind-blowing interior, but I haven't seen any pictures on the net...
