Merkinė church

Quote:
First time mentioned in 1442, but it is possibility that this church was built by Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland Jogaila. Church built near town centre. In front of it was small square. This church is different from the other gothic churches in Lithuania because has very wide presbitery. Arhc completes each nave - this is an original solution in Lithuania. This solution used later in Naugardukas ortodox church. In 1655 Russia army destroyed church and later Merkinė church was restored to baroque style. Former gothic church compostion now shows gothic windows and buttresses.
Arch completes each nave

Windows and butresses

Front of Church - baroque style

In winter

By the way, this church is still waiting for archeological excavations. There is a possibility that thre is a hidden of the most prominent Lithuanian rulers - Vytautas The Great

Beautiful Church. It is amazing to see how simple this structure is (compared to the most famous of the world's cathedrals), yet how beautiful and meaningful in its use of details and proportion. Truly a great example of classical architecture that endures and becomes part of the prized heritage of the people which surround it.

"Buried" is probably a more appropriate word. I don't think he's still alive, hiding in the basement for 6 centuries.

Yea..buried, but You know what I mean. There is possibility that body of Vytautas during War against Russia in 1665 was somewhere hidden.

Church of Vytautas the Great in Kaunas

Quote:
The church was built in the right bank of the Neman River around 1400 for Franciscan monks and foreign merchants. It was ordered and funded by Vytautas the Great as a commendation to the Blessed Virgin Mary for saving his life after a major defeat in the Battle of the Vorskla River. The church layout of the Latin cross is unique in the Lithuanian Gothic. After the ground level around the church has been raised significantly, the façades became lower and the windows were shortened, as well as the side portals were removed.[1] The bell tower was added later and probably has been used to guide ships navigating Neman River.
