Plans underway to set up WTC in Dar es Salaam Send to a friend
Sunday, 13 February 2011 13:11

By Al-amani Mutarubukwa,
The Citizen on Sunday Reporter

Dar es Salaam. International trade and investment between Tanzania and the rest of the world is expected to gain momentum as the government and the business community get keener in the processes to establish World Trade Centre in Dar es Salaam.

To be completed in two years to come or so, the World Trade Centre (Dar es Salaam) is expected to be the first and of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Speaking at the launching of the initiative yesterday in Dar es Salaam, Mr Theo Poggenpoel, the vice president World Trade Centre-Africa, said the international trade platform was ready to set up the centre in the country and that they were only in need of strategic partners.

ìIt will be a milestone to Tanzania and the continent as the move intends to bring international trade more close to Tanzanian traders,î he said.

Currently, there are only two WTC business centres in Africa, one in Johanesburg and another in Cape Town.

However, there were about 12 countries in the continent queued to be granted licenses by the World Trade Centre Associations based in New York.

The countries include Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Namibia and Madagascar.

ìWe hope that through public private partnership initiatives, WTC Dar es Salaam will be a focal point for reliable partnership in international trade and investments including access to international finance,î said Mr Saidi Msangi, the WTC Dar es Salaam vice president.

He said the centre would work closely with public institutions involved in promoting trade and investments to enable the country become a middle-income economy in the next ten years as had been envisaged.

World Trade Centres are powerhouses that integrate all the facilities and services necessary to transact international business and give companies (regardless of the size) the expeditious access to international market.

Currently, the WTCís Association owns a worldwide business network in more than 330 cities and 100 countries.

The government backs the initiative and to enable speedy and successful implementation of the project, it has directed the National Housing Corporation (NHC) to look for a suitable area that could be used for construction of the centre.

ìWe are fully committed to see this initiative come trueÖwe have directed the NHC director to identify the suitable land where the centre will be built,î said Mr Pastory Magombe, the assistant director for multilateral programme, Ministry of Industry and Trade.

According to him, the concept of the centre was started some ten years ago, however, it was not well -conceived like it is now.

Business community said the move was commendable because the presence of the centre in Dar es Salaam will open the existing international trade barriers especially those pertaining to standards and lack of market information.

Mr Alkarim Hiran, the Mansoor Industries director said that once the centre is in place, it could enable exporters to easily gather information on what products would be needed in the market at best terms.

Dar es Salaam to have World Trade Centre
From DAILY NEWS Reporter in Cape Town, 4th May 2011 @ 20:00,

PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete on Wednesday asked the proposed World Trade Centre (WTC) in Dar es Salaam to focus on agriculture, information technology and manufacturing as a strategy of lifting millions of Tanzanians out of poverty.

The president, who visited the WTC Cape Town on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa, pledged full government support to the project including provision of land and other relevant facilities.

The World Bank and WTC Cape Town are among institutions supporting the proposed establishment of a similar centre in Dar es Salaam.

"This is a good project and I can assure you full government support," the President stressed during talks with WTC officials and his delegation.

Mr Kikwete also told the officials that by investing in Tanzania, the centre would easily reach other East African Community (EAC) member states, namely -- Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.

The WTC Chairman, Mr Conrad Sidego, listed a long catalogue of economic and social benefits that Tanzania would get through establishment of the centre including trade promotion, marketing research, assistance in clinching commercial transactions with the right value for money, management of import and exports as well as international contact networking.

"Through membership of the World Trade Centres Association (WTCA) based in New York, the WTC Cape Town and WTC Dar es Salaam will provide local business communities (in South Africa and Tanzania) access to global network of businesses in 334 cities in more than 100 countries with linkage to over a million business leaders," Mr Sidego said.

He stressed that Africa had for many decades remained a continent of hopelessness and aid was regarded as a right response. "The right solution to Africa's challenges including the state of hopelessness is trade and not aid alone. This is a better way to bring hope to Africans," Mr Sidego insisted.

The Vice-President of the WTC Dar es Salaam, Mr Said Msangi, said that the proposed centre would facilitate clinching of highly beneficial deals more transparently through economies of scale.

He said WTCs were linked with several hundreds of shipping lines, insurance firms, traders and buyers globally where deals can be negotiated at lower prices.

Mr Msangi also hinted on WTC's ability to bring to an end unfair trade practices through cartels which unnecessarily push up prices of sensitive commodities like sugar and fertilizer.

"We have been able to investigate prices at various sources and noted that the items can be available at cheaper offers," he said.

Meanwhile, SAMSUNG Group, a multinational South Korean conglomerate, plans to establish an assembly plant in Tanzania, it was revealed here on Wednesday.

Dr Herman Moshi, the Chairman of World Trade Centre (WTC) Dar es Salaam project, told journalists that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to that effect was signed in Cape Town, South Africa, last week.

He said that the assembly plant would be established under the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) scheme initially producing consumer products including personal computers, air-conditioners, mobile phones and many other electronic gadgets.

"We hope the plant will start soon," Dr Moshi said.

The Samsung Group comprises numerous international affiliated businesses, most of them united under the Samsung brand including Samsung Electronics, the world's largest technology company by sales; Samsung Heavy Industries, the world's second largest shipbuilder.

Dr Moshi said the project would enable Tanzania increase industrial exports to many other African countries and create many jobs.
