Any news on this pair? Is it going into sales?

nope. Apparently going to launch in the fall, but we shall see. the Developer isn't exactly experienced so I wouldn't be surprised if it just goes quietly into the night.

Would be a crying shame if it doesn't happen. I'm sure Gehry would like to see one of his major works built in his hometown before he dies. It promises to be a gem too.

Gehry already has the AGO in Toronto, this isn't his first project in the city.

I know but that's not a big legacy project like this would be. He only did a small part of the AGO. I'm sure he'd like to leave a bigger mark on Toronto than that.

The height is great, but why do they have to look like stacked pallets or broken boxes thrown on top of each other?

Why not?
Only straight lines and mirror-facades are so boring nowadays.
We've seen enough of that stuff the past decades.

Some movement on this one to go along with that too. They have now applied for site plan approval. Wonder why it took them so long, its usually done in concurrency with a rezoning. Essentially rezoning deals with large things like height and density, then details like exactly where the parking ramp is, what kind of pavers are going to get used on the sidewalk, where the entrances to the building are, etc. gets worked out in the site plan agreement. Typically this takes about 9 months. Once they have approval of this, they can file for a building permit provided that they have the financing.

The big question on this one though is going to be the financing - its not an experienced developer and doing a project this scale will either require them to partner with someone with a history in development, sell the vast majority of the units, or get creative on financing (private money, borrowing from friends, etc. instead of a traditional bank loan).

Good to hear some news regardless. These promise to be among the finest buildings to be found anywhere.

Don't think this was posted here yet.

http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/1996...state-veteran/

Stupidandshallow from UT - Apparently this is launching this year...

an excerpt from The Epoch Times, New Condo Launches Will Attract Much Chinese Interest, Says Real Estate Veteran:

With 12 to 15 percent of the market share, Milborne is the country’s top firm. It oversees a myriad of projects, the most remarkable of which might be Mirvish+Gehry Toronto, the 92-storey double-tower landmark slated to be built on King St. in Toronto’s downtown core. The mixed-use development will house 1,950 residential units and should propel Toronto into the world’s uppermost tier of cities.

“It’s the project of the decade,” declared Davie. “These two buildings will be a work of art. They’re going to be landmark buildings, at the level of something you’d see in Shanghai or Hong Kong or Dubai; buildings everyone is going to want to own and be a part of, so we’re looking forward to launching that this year.

I saw the model of this project at the Rotterdam Architecture Biennale. I was really impressed! It will be an amazing addition to the Toronto cityscape.

I think the shape could be more elegant. But it sure beats a green glass spandrel box. I am open to warming up to this.

It doesn't conform to most ideas about what a building should look like. That's what makes it intriguing. Gehry's buildings look chaotic but every aspect is well thought out, exists for a reason, and compliments the whole. It's what I love about his buildings. The offset boxes at the top used to irritate me. Now I think it makes the whole composition better. A waterfall .....isn't that what it's meant to convey?

I don't think we need to worry about the quality of materials so I'm giddy with anticipation for this proposal. It promises to be something very special.

Interchange42, UT - "Gehry's design is pretty much completed for this project, and Projectcore are looking for the right construction team now. Not just anyone can build this development."

New post on M+G website

http://mirvishandgehrytoronto.com/mi...-from-the-top/

Quote:
In April we reached a major milestone in the planning process and we’re working towards finalizing the design.
Currently, our project includes the tallest approved building in Toronto, and all of Canada.
The predominant features of the design are in place
and the team will continue to refine the architectural details
and interiors with Gehry’s signature elements.

Our project will have unprecedented views of the lake and city,
with the West Tower and East Tower standing at 92 storeys (1000’) and 82 storeys (900’) respectively.
There will be multiple levels of underground parking, as well as a podium base, which will include flagship retail and commercial offices.
We’re also honoured to have an extension of OCAD University’s campus in the East Tower’s podium.
The residential amenities are located on the terrace level of the podiums with additional amenities and
a terrace on the 61st and 67th floor of the West and East tower respectively.
Features a picture of what the view from the top of the building will look like: (The image is too big; click on the link above for a smaller picture)
