Construction of ramp on the south end of the in-service portion of the Green Line (north-south line), which will connect the above-ground Sampige Road station (current terminus) to the underground Majestic station (which has already opened on the east-west Purple Line).

BMTC to roll out smart cards in January

From next year, hopping from one bus to another, or from a bus to a metro, might not be an ordeal of change and cards.

The BMTC hopes to launch its smart cards to allow for cashless, seamless travel for bus passengers from January.

Ekroop Caur, managing director of BMTC, said the trial runs will be done by the year-end, while the rollout is expected in January. “This can, in fact, be used for non-transport expenses as well as in metro stations,” she said during a workshop on Thursday that saw participation of several State transport undertakings deliberating on ways to modernise the bus systems.

The cards can be tapped on the newly acquired electronic ticketing machines for contactless cash transfer.

While talks were on with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd., officials admit to “issues” in integrating the proposed card and the existing metro cards.

“There needs to be software integration, which can be worked on after the trials are done,” said U.A. Vasanth Rao, chief public relations officer, BMRCL.

‘Reduce taxes on BMTC’

Meanwhile, M. Nagaraju, chairman, BMTC, said he would write to the government to reduce the tax burden on the BMTC which was keeping it from lowering fares. According to officials, the BMTC pays Rs. 120 crore just in motor vehicle taxes.

I personally like Bengaluru metro more than other Indian metro systems because it has the same type of electricity supply, i.e via 3rd rail, and it is same like my city Kolkata. Although two main differences are Bengaluru metro is mostly elevated, and completely SG, where as Kolkata metro is mostly underground, and completely BG. Also the green line rolling stocks are visually pretty. It currently has 2 lines— purple & green.

After a long awaiting, purple line is now completed fully, but green line is still isolated, and not connected with purple line. I hope this connection will be completed in this year. At present it is connected by suburban train.

After reading many websites I’ve recently saw some matters, which arise some questions and curiosity. Here I’m writing.

1) Green line is being extended up-to Puttenahalli. It will then finish the entire network, and will connected with purple line. The entire line was planned to complete in April 2017, but like previous openings, Bengaluru again missed the timeline. When it will be opened commercially?

2) Purple line is planned to extend more eastern Bengaluru towards Whitefield, and more western Bengaluru towards Kengeri. Both of these extensions are very very important, because in both ends it will be connected with suburban railway network. Still now Bengaluru has not a true suburban rail system, so traveling from east to west Bengaluru is very difficult. Trains are infrequent, and bus service is chaotic because of increasing road traffic. Only one passenger train connects this two points and two express trains also, but for a modern city it is very poor service. Metro will run 5 minutes interval from dawn to midnight, and traveling between two points will be much easy and fast. Also peoples who will come from Chennai or Mysuru could get down at those two stations, and could take metro to reach city centre much easily, there will be no need to wait for a very poor rail service. I heard this extension will be opened in 2020, will it possible, has the construction started?

3) Green line is planned to extend more northern Bengaluru towards BIEC, and more southern Bengaluru towards Anjanapura. Both of these extensions are also important, because those places has not sufficient transportation. I heard this extension will be opened in 2020, will it possible, has the construction started?

4) I heard number of coach will be increased and 6 coach train will start run on Purple line from July 2017. Is it true?

5) Is there any system for baggage checking when entering in the station area or platform area?

6) Is drinking water available in station area?

7) Are there any display board in platform about next train? If yes, what kind of it—dot matrix or LED?

8) Do they play light music in background at station platforms?

9) Do all stations has side platforms? Or some has island platforms or both side platforms?

10) Is there any special seats for children, ladies, senior citizens and handicapped persons in both platform and inside the metro cars?

11) Is there any entertainment television in platforms?

12) Is photography allowed inside station premises?

13) What kind of fare it is used for, single, return and multiple journey tickets?

14) Do they have all day ticket system i.e. unlimited journey on any metro routes for a day?
