amazing, our connection to the US is so strong and was so strong even pre-war, we helped America win independence and yet look what happened to us during and post WW II maybe Sikorski is right.

Indeed, our love for the US was always strong. But the power of this feeling was never reciprocated

"Herbewo" (established in 1924 as a result of the union of three enterprises owned by Rudolf Herliczka, Władysław Bełdowski and Stanisław Wołoszyński, the name of the company derives from the first letters of the names of the three founders)

In the interwar period, Herbewo Company was one of the largest factories producing cigarette tubes and wrapping paper. Its products were exported to Europe, Asia, both Americas and Australia.

Poles in Bukovina, Romania

The first Poles settled in Bukovina in the times of Casimir III. Most of the Poles immigrating after 1774 were looking for work. Polish miners from Bochnia and Wieliczka were brought to salt mines in Cacica. Another wave of Polish immigration arrived in Bukovina in the early 19th century, when the region was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, as was a significant portion of Poland. Around 1803 Polish highlanders from Czadca (now Čadca, Slovakia) settled in Treblecz (Tereblecea) by Siret, in Stara Huta Krasna and in Kaliczanka and again in 1814-1819, this time settling in Hliboka (Adâncata) and Tereszna. Nowy Sołoniec was settled in 1834, Plesza in 1835 and Pojana Mikuli in 1842.

There were probably other waves of migration from Poland after the November and Kraków Uprisings, but most Poles were from peasant families relocated there by the Empire's authorities after they participated in the Jakub Szela insurrection. There were about 80,000 Poles living in Romania in 1939, but only about 11,000 remained in 1949 after Romania lost Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina (the most important Polish community lived in Czerniowce, now in Ukraine).

Tour de Pologne

The 71st edition of the Tour de Pologne gets under way on Sunday August 3, 2014 with the race marking the anniversary of 25 years of free elections since the fall of Communism.

The initial concept of the TdP's multi-stage format was modeled after the popular Tour de France.

The proposal for organizing the event was submitted jointly by the Warsaw Cycling Society and the Przegląd Sportowy sports newspaper published in Kraków. Thanks to their initiative, a Wyścig Dookoła Polski (Race Around Poland, the original name of the TdP) was held in the summer of 1928 . The historic first edition of the race took place on 7–11 September 1928. 71 cyclists rode almost 1,500 km — the winner was Felix Więcek from the Bydgoszcz Cycling Club.

Until the outbreak of World War II, the TdP took place four times, two of which — in the years 1937 and 1939 - were won by the "Tiger of the Roads" - Bolesław Napierała.

Today's view from street view: click here

Take a look at very characteristic building on the left at the corner and top from the first building on the right. Trees are gone, kamienica on the left was destroyed during the war, and big building on the left remained main post office since (not visible on the old photo, but the finish line was in front of the post office).
