Piłsudski wanted to restore old borders of Commonwealth and create federation of central-eastern european countries under the polish headship, so that this federation could actually have any power to compete against Soviet Union and Germany. But it wasn't the best time for such ideas, since Austria-Hungary just fell aparat by being actually pulled apart by numerous nationalities and European nations also became quite nationalist. During the negotations with Soviet Union, Poland could easily demand more lands in the east, but nationalists weren't really willing to take it, since they wanted more of monoethnic population. With all the lands in the east, huh, polish nationality would state maybe 50% of whole population. Anyway, prospect of the future during the interwar period was really bad anyways..
Hey Buddy

Apologies for the delay replying to your very kind answer.

I had heard of Pilsudkis plans and whilst I can see the romantic vision in them they were perhaps optimistic as most peoples who had been liberated from Austrian domination would not willingly swap it for percieved Polish domination.

As for the choice of the borderline, I guess its one of those random anomalies. I had assumed it was picked with some reference to the Commonwealths former lands, but they stretched far to the East. Likewise, the Southern portion uses the Zbruch River, which I believe was the boundary for the former Galician Province of Austria-Hungary. This meant that significant numbers of Ukranians were resident in Poland. However, as we know it still left thousands of ethnic Poles in the USSR, in places like Zytomyr for example. The border for territories now in Belarus is even more difficult to make sense of (and impossible to form a defensive readoubt). I guess in this period logic played little part in matters......much like the division of disputed parts of Silesia, where those campaigning to be in Czechoslovakia ended up in Poland, and, those wishing to live in Poland became part of Czechoslovakia

Anyway, again great thread guys. I know you don't want political discussions dragging it off topic so I will leave it there

miłego dnia

The Maritime and Colonial League (Polish: Liga Morska i Kolonialna) was a mass Polish social organization, created in 1930 out of the Maritime and River League (Liga Morska i Rzeczna). In the late 1930s it was directed by general Mariusz Zaruski and its purpose was to educate the Polish nation about maritime issues. It also actively supported the development of both a merchant fleet and navy, as well as the creation of Polish colonies and overseas possessions.[1]

Among countries regarded as suitable for Polish overseas settlements, there were such nations as Brazil (Paraná), Peru, Liberia, Portuguese Mozambique and French possessions in Africa, with Madagascar. The organization enjoyed widespread popularity and in 1939 had around one million members.

The photos of the Jewish community are very painful to look at.

Well that's how Orthodox Jews looked and dressed like. There are still some in the USA.

Pew Research Center (link) claims that around 10% of American Jews are Orthodox Jews:

In pre-war Poland the majority of Jews were such orthodoxly religious, unassimilated ones:

I am aware of that. I am from New York City. I know what orthodox Jews look like. I was not referring their physical appearance.

I was referring - obviously - to the terrible suffering and horror that awaited them a very short time later, and that the vast majority of them would be murdered. It is very sad and poignant.

For many of them it would have been easier to hide if they weren't standing out from Gentiles so much.

Some historian suggested that Jews with lighter hair, eyes, not circumcised, etc. had a better chance to survive.

Here is data on hair colours collected by pre-war anthropologists:

Land - % light hair (Jews / Gentiles) | % very dark hair (Jews / Gentiles):

Prussia - 11.23 / 39.75 | 43.34 / 14.05
Hesse - 11.17 / 31.53 | 41.50 / 13.22
Baden - 10.32 / 24.34 | 41.95 / 21.18
Bavaria - 10.38 / 20.36 | 39.45 21.10
Alsace-Lorraine - 13.51 / 18.44 | 34.59 / 25.21

Jews were statistically speaking much darker-haired than Gentiles.

Land - % of light hair for Jews (I couldn't find for Gentiles in these lands):

Silesia - 8.20
Pommern - 8.85
Brandenburg - 9.64
East & West Prussia - 11.61
Galicia - 13.97
Posen - 12.39
Congress Poland - 13.28
Bohemia - 8.29
Lower Austria - 8.69
Moravia - 9.86
Bukovina - 13.55

Data cited from "JewishEncyclopedia.com" website.

Henryk Szpidbaum (himself Jewish) in 1933 published data on eye colours among Polish Jews:

Light eyes - 20.59%

This is much lower than among Gentile Poles (68% to 72.4% light eyes, depending on source).
