What is this building and what will happen to it??

I have noticed a skyscraper just by Hyde park that is under construction and it looks as though it is at exactly the same stage since i viewed it around a year ago. If this is just slow construction then okay but if there is actually a problem there it is an abandoned project what do you think will happen to it?

It is Knightsbridge Barracks. It is being renovated/converted to apartments.

What is the actual deal with that?

Is there going to be a reclad, or just a clean? Because I can't comprehend how the incredible location and the property prices of the area don't justify a demolition & construction of a beautiful new building. And what of the neighbouring lower-rise buildings of the barracks complex?

I thought I read a while back that the MOD were looking to sell this site and that the Candy bros were interested, is that correct someone?. If so a waste of a refurb.
Ugly Brutal building I agree, designed by Sir Basil Spence.
Basil Fawlty could have designed something better!!

Absolutely awful. How anyone allowed this to be built in such a sensitive area is beyond comprehension. Perhaps English Heritage were not aggresive in those days. Was hoping that it would be demolished along with the rest of the barracks to make way for something sympathetic. Having a distinguished architect behind it stamps approval.

after the redevelopment i believe it could look acceptable, clad in glass or something.

To be fair, it was built by the MOD, they can probably get away with more.

I've actually noticed significant work on it now, they are making it look very artistic

EDIT: My bad guys, they removed the scaffolding a bit off the top to show exterior which i presumed was the new result but it's actually the same as before! may not be such a dazzling renovation, i did think it looks a bit old fashioned

If it were a beautiful building, I don't think people would be so upset about its height, or hoping today for them to totally rip the facade away and replace it with something better.

When will we ever learn?

The MoD have confirmed it is to be sold on condition that a new barracks be built nearby, possible on the other side of Hyde Park.

That was Chelsea Barracks. This is Knightsbridge (Hyde Park) Barracks.
