Yekaterinburg has 4 tracks between Sverdlovsk Sortirovochnyi on west and Shartash on east. Also, there are double track freight corridores on south and north. With such huge capacities, why commuter trains servicies are so poor? Airport line has only 4 round trips per day, and the most of commuter rail lines have 3-7 round trips per day. I am sure that there is more people who would use those trains, if the schedule is better. Standard servicies are every 1 our, every 15, 20 or 30 minutes. Sometimes, servicies every 35,40 or 45 minutes are acceptible, and sometimes every 90 or 120 minutes, if the transport need is not so high, or on weekends.

Compared to very expensive new metro constructions, railway infrastructure still exist. Only need somewhere some upgradings.

an interesting question ... what are "S-Bahn", "Metro", or "RER" in Australian cities? is there a precise definition?

I'd be interested to know more about your urban transport system: with no knowlege of Russian , it's a bit of a challenge. From the link up above (quoted in posting #22) I found more maps: and hoped to find a timetable: but I didn't.

We have 2 routes of city train:
1. Keramik Station(Керамик) - Classification Yard(Екатеринбург-Сортировочный) through Central Station
2. Central Station(Екатеринбург-Пассажирский) - Airport Koltsovo

here are timetables:
for 1st route

for 2nd route

Actually it's usual russian commuter rail (electrichka) but it doesn't leave the city.
Low frequency of service is due to Russian Railways, but it's very difficult to explain.

It's indeed strange how freight tracks were chosen for "City train" passenger services.

It seems there is a anti-hotlinking protection for http://www.intermonitor.ru/wp-conten.../metro-ekb.jpg so one can share a link to picture, but can't embed it in page.

It is simply ridiculuos to publish such plans - the construction of the Yekaterinburg metro started in 1980 and 34 years later the network consists of ... one line and 9 stations (on average a staggering 0,265 stations built every year ). At this pace Yekaterinburg will have 3 metro lines and 31 stations in ... 2097

Have you considered that perhaps metro construction in Yekaterinburg may have been delayed for the past twenty years because of the transition happening in Russia?

Actually, after short period of financial help in late 00s, federal funding were once again diverted from the small metros.
Which aren't necessarily bad, because existed system stimulated construction of metros in places, were they weren't feasible, but had been chosen to construct due to fact they would be financed by federal authorities. Too bad nearly no alternate ways of funding transit projects were provided to his day.

or

The construction of Ekaterinburg second metro line will start in 2016 and will cost approximately RUB 80 bn (EUR 1.7 bn), according to city authorities. If construction works will start as planned, the line could be operational in early 2018.

The regional and federal governments are not expected to allocate funding for this project earlier that 2016.

This year, an amount of RUB 150 million (EUR 3.17 million), from the local city budget will be invested in planning and design works of the second metro line.

In 2018, Ekaterinburg will host matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cupтм.
