Muiden, Noord-Holland province, The Netherlands

Muiden (pop. 6500) is another small fortified village, situated at the shore of the IJssel lake where the Vecht river flows into the lake.
Muiden is very close to Amsterdam and is therefore very popular with day-trippers. The Muiderslot castle that dominates the skyline is one of the largest castles in The Netherlands.

Some French villages

France is very well-known for its beautiful charming villages. Here's a list of some i visited over the years. All credits to the respected photographers.

Isle sur la Sorgue (Island in the Sorgue). Isle is a provencal town (pop. 17000) in the south of France. The town is located where the Sorgue river branches into various small streams. The water streams were used in the past to drive water mills, of whom a few still exist nowadays. Due to the ever-existent water, Isle is often referred to as 'Venice of the Provence'.
The source of the Sorgue river itself is a few km's further at the 'Fontaine de Vaucluse', a water-filled hole in the ground that has been discovered by divers to a depth of 300 metres.

Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, Bourgogne, France

Flavigny (pop. 330) is a very small hilltop village in Burgundy. Unlike other hilltop villages such as Noyers and Vezelay, Flavigny is les touristy, remaining its very calming medieval atmosphere.

Carla-Bayle, Ariege, France

Also in the Ariege department, Carla-Balye is a very small (pop. 700) village. The charming village does offer a spectacular view of the surrouding landscape.

Vaison-la-Romaine, Vaucluse, France

Vaison (pop. 6000) is an antique village at the foot of the Mont Ventoux which history goes back to Roman times. Many monuments that exist today date back to this period, the most famous being the Roman bridge that connects the old and new town.
