Royal retreat a sight to behold
By GEETHA KRISHNAN An amazing building perched on a hill greets those who drive into the heart of Putrajaya, often leaving them wondering if their eyes are deceiving them. Istana Melawati, the retreat of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Raja Permaisuri Agong, is indeed a magical sight. While the palace isn’t open to the public, tourists rarely stifle the urge to photograph the splendour of the building from afar. One of the rising turrets cast a shadow on the pool area of the palace. Modelled after ancient Malay palaces, Istana Melawati bears close resemblance to Istana Kenangan in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. Other influences were derived from the magnificent architectural elements of the Malay Archipelago. Spread over a 6.9ha site with a lush garden and a view that is hard to beat, Istana Melawati lives up to the general grandeur of palaces by leaving its own distinctive marks. Driveways leading to the palace are dotted with streetlights featuring birdcage designs. Light fittings within the Reception Lounge are based on the less-inverted grasshopper cage design. Understated opulence thrives within the airy lounge where timber works and elaborate carvings blend with contemporary Czech chandeliers and Indonesian sandstone columns. Located within the third wing, the lounge also looks out on a ceremonial courtyard flanked by traditional wooden gazebos built over water. Away from the lounge is a replica of a balai nobat made entirely from cengal wood by master craftsmen from Terengganu. The interior reflects the splendour of the exterior. The Royal Wing houses the private quarters of the King and Queen as well as VIP suites. The Main Wing is where all ceremonial and official functions are held. Official investiture ceremonies take place at the Bilik Singgahsana, which is grand in every aspect. The Rulers’ Conference Hall is where rulers of each state converge annually to discuss matters of national importance. Each chair bears the royal crest of each state, while smaller chairs are reserved for each Mentri Besar. The main banquet hall seats 250 guests, while a smaller hall is reserved for the royal family to dine in privacy and comfort.
