BELGRADE | Beko Complex redevelopment

Beko is an old factory in the downtown Belgrade, right next to the old fortress. Nowadays the whole former industrial area is completely decayed and the redevelopment of the Beko Complex is the first step in gentrification. After the factory went bankrupt the land was sold to Lamda Development and they've recently announced their intention to build a hotel-apartment-shopping complex on that spot. Zaha Hadid with Patrik Schumacher was commissioned for the project.

Current look of the factory

I strongly suggest first viewing the bird's eye view first to see the current state of the plot - http://binged.it/SSxHRe

Initial plan by Zaha Hadid that got objections from the city urbanists for some weird reasons.

Approved plan

Is this really planned for the foot of Kalemegdan?

No I just drew this in Paint Of course it is planned, it's actually very close to getting a construction permit.

The current "foot of Kalemegdan" features a decayed factory, brutalist sports complex, falling apart railway and a forest of commieblocks. Just in case you haven't noticed or if you think this would somehow damage the sacred area. Belgrade riverbanks are in no way similar to Budapest, there's nothing left protecting really.

Do I remember correctly that years ago you posted some plans/drawings for the reconstruction of what the 'foot of Kalemagdan' once looked like?

I don't think so

There is that ridiculous plan by Fujimoto for the other side of Kalemegdan

Thanks anyway, maybe it was somelse that made that post. It was in the Serbian section. It was renderings of what the original village, lower city, looked like. I think I remember seeing it some 5-6 years ago.

It doesn't seem to blend in too well with the surrounding environment. The main building of the factory doesn't look that bad by the way.

These are the projects I LOVE seeing! Really run down areas being turned around to beautiful urban masterpieces!
