It will be nice to be rid of the junky deli on the corner. I'd be shocked if SLG does not try to acquire the Rockefeller Group's adjacent, empty assemblage.

I agree! It needs to go.

OT-

Times Square right now is a hot mess. It’s basically a huge construction zone with the redevelopment of the pedestrian plaza with streams of tourists. Not very pleasant now.

The Marriot Marquis is undergoing a renovation adding retail at the base with huge digital signage.

This must be under construction. According to this newspaper article, the LED screen is completed and operational.

Hi, Seventh Shape.

That's a different sign at a different building.

You sure? In the article it says:

'The billboard, hovering over the Marriott Marquis Hotel, was commissioned by the Vornado Realty Trust'.

Is that different from the Marriot Edition?

Yes.

The Marriott Marquis at 1535 Broadway is what you are talking about; it was built in the mid-80s. The new billboard there is bigger than the one this thread is about.

The Marriott Edition will be built by Witkoff at 701 Seventh Avenue AKA 20 Times Square.

Times Square is amazing. These new digital billboards will be awesome!

What a boring, throw-away design for Times Square. The only redeeming part is the giant video screen.

Times Square will be video screens wall to wall when this is done.

Enough with the screens. It's time to put neon signs like in Tokyo. Screens are boring. Neon has charm. Check out Gonzalez and shinjuku and Nanking road sh to see what classy lighting looks like.

They look sort of "cheap" sometimes though. It won't fit New York for sure, it's not Asia. The same with these Christmas-tree-like lit-ups in Shanghai. It won't basically fit in NY as well. I think, LED look pretty much awesome and sort of reflect NY's charm and "point" in general.

Yes I wish there was a resurgence in neon, Tokyo neon boxes are best. It makes the most vivid colours. I guess it won't happen though because neon is less efficient then LED; but it would be great if someone could invent more energy efficient neon if that's possible.

I mean, I don't really enjoy spending time in Times Square, but it is what it is, and I think it should stay that way. It's the ultimate expression of shameless capitalist spectacle, which is an important part of our culture (like it or not). It's like a museum, really. So in that regard, build the screen. But the tower I could care less about.

A musuem, nah. I wouldn't describe it like that. It's just limited to that area so it appears unique. However, it should not be. Great Asian cities use lights on their major avenues and they become part of the cities identity. NY needs more lighting, in more places and down more streets. Times square is just an overly crass and overwhelming version of the classy neon-lit shopping avenues of Asia. NY'ers would appreciate it more if more avenues where NY'ers shop and work were lit up properly and were not associated with just tourists in a limited area. The fact that it's just on Times Square ruins the whole concept and NY'ers associate lights/signs/neon with that over-the-top overcrowded tourist hub.

NY needs more of these areas, more avenues with lights. This kind of night environment should be appreciated by more NY'ers. They are part of the cities in Asia, they can be here too. There is no reason why major shopping avenues should not have well thought out neon signs. Check out Ginza's main drag, it's very classy and well done, not like Times Square at all.
