Yesterday.

Fortunately, that disgusting Smilers' deli building has been cloaked in its death shroud and is being prepped for demo.

As noted, Smilers is adjacent to this huge contiguous assemblage that Rockefeller owns, but for toe little walk-ups owned by a third-party. I would be shocked if SLG doesn't acquire the whole parcel. Rockefeller owns everything seen in this photo, which is all vacant except for the parking garage which is still being used.

Rickefeller sold this collection of empty garbage on the north side of the street to another developer. It's all vacant, though the garage is still in use.

Nice building, nice that they are getting rid of those shitty buildings that were there before however a shame its not taller, 800 feet would have been nice instead of 500

For such as great location the design is pathetic, I can make a much better design in 1 hour on google sketch up and a better render.

Ehm, ok then, how about we give you an hour and you come up with something better than that somewhat decent box they have planned for this location?

it's Times Square. Good architecture there is unheard of since around the 30s. Onwards from that, everything was covered up by advertisements and neon signage.

De Blasio joins groundbreaking ceremony at 20 Times Square
http://nypost.com/2015/10/28/de-blas...-times-square/

Quote:
Steve Witkoff and Howard Lorber, joined by partners from Winthrop Realty Trust and Maefield Development, celebrated the groundbreaking of 20 Times Square on Monday morning at the construction site at 701 Seventh Ave. with politicians that included Mayor Bill de Blasio and Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.

Hotelier Ian Schrager watched from above as others struggled down the 100-foot-plus-long construction stairs to bedrock, where footings are going in for the 39-story, 452-room five-star Marriott Edition

Its base will have 76,000 square feet of retail and an 18,000-square-foot LED sign.

The entire project is being developed with union labor, Witkoff said.

The mayor noted Times Square had come a long way since 1985, when “it was skeevy,” but now, “Here we are, literally, in [sic] crossroads of the world — center of the universe, and here something great is going to happen.”

Among the other celebrants were Peter Ward, who heads the Hotel Trades Council, Tim Tompkins from the Times Square Alliance and Howard Michaels of the Carlton Group, who brought the parties together for the deal that included financing from Barry Sternlicht, whose son, James, just began working for Witkoff.

Times Square’s Marriott EDITION Hotel Breaks Ground, Will Boast 76,000SF of Food Space

Times Square’s Marriott EDITION Hotel Breaks Ground, Will Boast 76,000SF of Food Space

Earlier this week, the five-star Marriott EDITION hotel, slated to tower over Duffy Square, broke ground. The 39-story, 517-foot tall building is being developed by a partnership between the Witkoff Group, Howard Lorber’s New Valley LLC, Winthrop Realty Trust, and Maefield Development. Going by the invented address of 20 Times Square (701 Seventh Avenue), the 370,000-square-foot tower will be the first hotel to rise directly along the Square’s “bow-tie” area since Gary Barnett opened the W Times Square in 2000.

From my observations yesterday, lots of workers at the site. With trucks on the side street hauling garbage out of the vicinity. There is also a somewhat new DOB rendering at the site.

In terms of the plaza nearby, they allocated only 1 lane for traffic while they work on the Northern flank. Whole square is kinda chaotic due to the closing down of lanes for the demo and plaza as well.

Here is a pic from last week. Unfortunately my phone ran out of battery yesterday, so I couldn't take a shot of the diagram.

This was before the closing down of several lanes.

Pic by me

Seems like most of the demo is finishing up. The background skyscrapers are now exposed.

It appears that they are leaving the steel frame and have installed a tower crane.
