Portugal picks Synergy for final TAP airline bid
* No deadline yet, deal seen by year-end
* Synergy's Efromovich controls several Latam carriers
* Brazilian routes TAP's main selling point

LISBON- Portugal on Thursday named Synergy Aerospace, owned by Brazilian airline entrepreneur German Efromovich, as the sole potential buyer of its struggling national carrier TAP.
The sale of TAP, which is weighed down with an estimated 1.2 billion euros of debt, is part of a disposal of state assets required under Portugal's 78 billion-euro EU/IMF bailout.
Through Synergy, Efromovich controls Colombia's Avian airline, AviancaTaca, a tie-up with El Salvador's Tack, as well as the separately-operated Avian Brazil.
The AviancaTaca group is one of Latin America's leading commercial carriers with more than 100 routes in 14 countries.
State Secretary for Transport and Public Works Sergio Monteiro said Portugal would work on a binding bid with Synergy. The government hopes to seal a deal by the end of the year and complete it in the first quarter of 2013.
Monteiro said 10 companies showed interest in the privatisation, but did not name them. Previously, British Airways owner International Airlines Group (IA) and Germany's Lufthansa AG had expressed interest.
Efromovich's aggressive growth plans in Latin America have piled pressure on Brazil's two biggest carriers, Gold Lin has Aeneas and the TAM unit of regional group LAT Airlines.
Analysts say TAP's routes to Brazil -- Latin America's largest country and a former Portuguese colony -- are its key selling point.
The airline, with a fleet of 55 Airbus aircraft, carried 9 million passengers last year.
As part of the privatisation process, Portugal has already sold large stakes in its two electricity companies.
The government is also preparing to sell its ANA airport handling company by year-end.
Experts believe TAP's sale is unlikely to generate much new cash for the state as the proceeds would have to pay off its debts.

The Portuguese government has announced that the Brazilian group retained Synergy Aerospace, which controls Avianca-Taca and Avianca Brazil, the privatization of the airline TAP Portugal.

The announcement of 18 October 2012 by the Ministry of Transport has confirmed the South American group as the only possible buyer the national airline, whose privatization was a condition to the bailout of 78 billion euros provided by the Union European and IMF (Portugal's airports must follow the same path). This sale could bring in some $ 500 million to the state, even if TAP Portugal has lost 112 million euros in the first half and faced a debt of over one billion. Financial details of the acquisition should be finalized by the end of the year, for a formalization of the sale in the first quarter of 2013.

The move will allow Avianca - Taca, which operates to more than one hundred destinations including Madrid and Barcelona, have dozens of access points in Europe via Lisbon airport. TAP Portugal serves 46 destinations on the continent, but its strength lies also in the 74 weekly flights to Africa and especially Brazil - Brazil where Avianca flies to 24 destinations from its two bases in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Both parties are members of Star Alliance.

Based in Bogota, the group Avianca - Taca change its name at the beginning of next year, leaving only the name of the Colombian national carrier. It ranks third income in Latin America, behind LATAM (born of the merger between LAN and TAM Brazilian Airlines) and low cost Brazilian GOL.

TAP Portugal transported 4,710,000 passengers between January and June 2012 (5%). It shares with other codes between TAM Brazilian Airlines, Aegean Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Air China, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Turkish Airlines, airBaltic, Alitalia and Ukraine International Airlines.

Nice job TAP for adding new routes next year. I was looking at the route maps and saw that they do not serve Istanbul at all. That is a major hole in their route network. You have two star alliance hubs and one is growing very rapidly. Is there any plans to open a route to the middle east or to Asia or more to the americans? Like to Dubai or Beijing or any other routes.

That's quite a notable expansion. Wasn't TAP not in the best financial position last year?

GTR66, Istanbul-Lisbon is served daily by Turkish Airlines.
Turkish Airlines also announced their intention to open Istanbul-Porto flights in 2014. But we have no news yet...
Regarding Asia, in the 90's TAP had flights to Bangkok, Macau and Telaviv. Dubai is served also daily by Emirates.
With the arrival of new A350, some destinations in Asia could be open. As far as I read on national foruns, Tokyo, Beijing and Mumbai are on the list... To America, people talk about destinations such as Chicago, Washington and the return to Toronto, Montreal and Boston. But there are not enough planes available for such expansion.

Indeed financial position isn't the best. If you look just for flight operations, TAP is profitable. However, after buying former Varig maintenance company, this sector became a headache... TAP has its own maintenace company, TAP Maintenance & Engineering. It has one main centre in Portugal and two in Brazil. The Brazilian section is recovering and been restructured, but profits aren't yet enough.

Birmingham, as well as Edinburgh, are good candidates for a next expansion!

Today I saw the news on German television DW saying that tomorrow if the government decides to privatize or not Portugal TAP, which has a large resistance from the employees of the airline. They also said that interested bidders are two clusters in Latin America: Avianca and who else will be ?. Previous records show that the owner of Avianca conglomerate is more than interested.
