Proposed Casablanca metro

Moroccan authorities have been debating a mass transit solution for Casablanca for the last 30 years, but things seem to be moving now. The city council and the ministry of transport have set a 2006 deadline for the final go/no-go for a metro/lightrail.

The line will be on ground level or elevated between the Sidi Moumen suburb and the Route de Médouina, from where the line will go underground.

Route de Médouina and Boulevard Mohammed VI are the busiest (and most congested) roads in Casablanca. The proposed metro will connect the suburbs with the railway network and two intercity bus terminals, before it continues to the city center and the Hassan II mosque on the Atlantic ocean.

No decisions have been made about stations, although you can be sure that there will be a "Mohammed V" station on the square of the same name. The railway station "Nouvelle medina" will probably be turned into a multimodal hub, with express regional bus services also planned to terminate there.

Some variations for the stretch between Sidi Moumen and Route de Médouina are still under consideration.

The entire line would be 15.5 km, with 10.3 km of it underground. The potential number of passengers is 150,000 per day.

There will be a feasability study for a network of tramways, but it looks like this will be the only underground line.

Rabat, too, is planning two tramway lines between Rabat city center and its "twin city" of Salé. Agadir has been considering building a tramway since 2000.

And after all the great DIY metro maps, here's one of the Casablanca express system. It's based on a study from a few years ago. The orange line would be the metro/lightrail. The other lines would be tramways or just express buses.

Besides the new tramway, Casablanca also has the Al Bidaoui RER line, which is an integration of a modern city-centre underground rail and a pre-existing set of commuter rail lines. Within the city, the RER functions like a metro, but outside the city, the system acts as an express train. It opened in 2002 and currently has 8 stations, running from the Mohammed V International Airport to Ain Sebaa.

Casablanca's future rail transit network consists of about four tramway lines, the Al Bidaour RER line, and a metro line. There may also be a bus rapid transit line.

The new tram looks similar to the one in Istanbul with gated stops.
