Yes, "it seems" but it's not entirely so and these statements can sometimes mislead people!

EU budget for Portugal is far lower than that attributed to other european nations, like Spain for example. More, EU contibutes with only 20% of the total cost of these projects!!!! Also, some of the projects are totally financed by portugal's own budget. Our annual budget is far better than most other european countries imagine.

Also bear in mind what Portugal offers in return for these monetary compensations, like killing off our own agriculture to compensate France's and England's already well-off farmers.

I know its largely cosmetic but most of our railways seem to have filthy ballast infested with weeds and a lot of wooden sleepers still.

Great pics, Portugal must have come a long way.
Reminds me when I travelled around europe by train, on the way back we went to Geneva airport on this smooth fast tilting train. When arriving back at Gatwick we were greeted by

really was a contrast

im really envious of the railways over there, double deck trains.. ones that actually turn up on time ...

I'm sure there will also be an upgrade of trains there soon.

Interesting looking rail network.
Nice to see it is modern
What other cities have suburban rail/tram systems?

In portugal, besides Lisbon we have them in Porto and Mirandela. Soon we will have them in Coimbra too. The city of Aveiro has a project but it's still deep in the drawer.

Two high-speed rail links estimated to cost 7.2 bln euros

The construction of high speed rail links connecting Lisbon with Madrid and with Porto, due to be operational by 2013, is estimated to cost around 7.2 bln eur, the Portuguese press reported, citing a government study. The construction of the Lisbon-Madrid link is expected to cost the Portuguese side 2.2 bln eur, while the Lisbon-Porto line is expected to cost almost 5 bln eur, the daily Publico reported.

Portugal will build five new high speed railways by 2018, including four which will connect to neighbouring Spain. Total cost amounts to €12,5bn. Construction will start 2006 and trip times from Lisbon and Oporto to Madrid will be reduced to three hours.

Although Portugal has begun the process of building brand new bullet-like high speed lines (TGV), the older ones have also been rebuilt with new, high speed trains (180km/h).

Yes, quite a bit. It gave back much more I believe, such as less fisheries and agriculture production which has lead to many bankrupt farmers. Portugal doesn't receive a fraction of what other european nations receive in agriculture finance subsidies.

Yes, that's sad! The CAP doesn't work for small farms. I have no remorse over the money from other EU members that went into building the Portugal railway network. It allowed for Calatrava's works which I greatly admire
