Nice photos.
Have you visited both cities? How much time have you been in Portugal?
Did you like Porto and Lisbon? I hope so.
You should come back and visit other cities such as Coimbra and Aveiro. These cities are very beautiful and they're full of history. Aveiro is called the portuguese Venice, because of its channels.

Forgot to mention free wifi which worked fine during the whole journey

The voyage could be even faster, but the Norte Line is very saturated by other trains services in some sections, and between Gaia & Ovar the line it self it isn`t on the best conditions for hi-speed trains.
I've noticed that exploring local CP urban services near Porto. Will post pictures on that too.

Did you like the voyage to Pinhão & Pocinho?? Till 1985 you could go to Barca D`Alva (location » portuguese border) and till 1984 (Salamanca-Spain) and go through these tunnels and viaduct (click here & click here)!!
That was mine second time on Linha do Douro Loved it. And such contracts on almost deserted Pocinho and lively Pinhão.

I'm aware of this line being thoroughfare in a past - it's a pity it's not open to Spain anymore... Scenery is much more wild east from Barca d'Alva! There are videos on that topic on YouTube, like this or that one. Will probably walk in one day

Thanks! There will be a few more from CP urban services near Porto and Lisbon.

That was mine third time in Portugal. I like both cities, but Porto better Lisbon is just too big and too crowded Porto's got that special charm

Aveiro sounds like a really good idea for next visit!

Yes, Aveiro is really beautiful, you must visit it. Coimbra is near Aveiro and it's bigger and very beautiful too. The 1st portuguese university was founded there, there're a lot of university traditions. A good time to go there is in 'Queima das Fitas'.

CP reduces losses in international service

The junction of Lusitania with Sud-Express and a single train to Spain and withdrawal of restaurant cars allowed for 2.8 million euros earned in two years

Trains Sud Expresso (Lisbon-Hendaye) and Lusitania Expresso (Lisbon-Madrid), who gave in 2012 to a loss of 7.2 million euros to CP, came to an end in 2014 with losses of 4.4 million euros in which resulted in an improvement of the results of 2.8 million.

Two management instruments explain this positive trend. The first was the junction of two trains in October 2012, in one composition in the section between Lisbon and Medina del Campo. Before, each train followed a different path, but since the Lusitania went on to be carried out by the Beira Alta (instead of following the Eastern line and extension of Caceres), it was possible to engage you to Sud Expresso, saving in traction (one locomotive just to tow the two compositions), the usage fee (railway toll) and crew.

The other measure is the withdrawal of the carriage-ons of each of the compositions, which, according to CP, translates into a gain of 759 EUR per year. The two convoys lost thus part of the glamor that had international travel, but the catering service was provided by carriage bar where refreshments are served.

In 2014, the Lusitania Expresso cost the CP 2.9 million euros and provided him with revenues of 2 million, which represented a loss of 900,000 euros (four years was 2.2 million). In reality, these figures should be multiplied by two, as CP and its Spanish counterpart Renfe train to explore the equal sharing of revenues and expenses, which are the values of the Portuguese part of the deal.

Sud Express is already fully exploited by the CP and cost him last year from 7.2 million euros to revenues of 3.7 million. This negative result of 3.5 million euros shows, however, a downward trend, as was EUR 5.1 million in 2011. Ten years ago, the losses amounted to eight million.

The improvements also explain on the revenue side, given the increased number of passengers. The Sud demand rose slightly between 2011 and 2014, from 77,000 to 78,000 customers. But the Lusitania jumped in the same period, the 62 thousand to 78 thousand.

Celta (Porto-Vigo) at a loss of 764 thousand euros

Celta, train connecting Porto Vigo twice daily, given in 2014 to a loss of 764,000 euros. This connection resulted from a ministerial decision of the governments of Portugal and Spain and consisted initially in a non-stop train between the two cities. Later, and as there were technical stops on your route (for crosses), commercial stops have been implemented in some seasons.

The service was always lacking, but the CP would never reveal how much, not even when, after complaining to the Access to Administrative Documents Commission in May 2014, this gave reason to PUBLIC. Urged the courts, the Supreme Administrative Court of Lisbon issued a judgment in November last year, which required the CP to disclose the number of passengers and the operating results of this train. But the company appealed, been losing on appeal a month ago.

The data is now revealed - a year and a month after the initial request - say the Celta had to CP spending 1.8 million euros and revenues of 1.1 million. Your loss coincides curiously with making the rental of rolling stock: 740,000 euros that CP paid to Renfe, the national railway carrier partner in this connection, to use self-propelled doing this service.

The payment of the usage fee to Refer stood at 297,000 euros, personnel costs allocated to Celta were 424 000 euros. Already making fuel reached 324,000 euros. In total, the three international trains (Sud, Lusitania and Celta) gave CP a loss of 6.1 million euros.

Privatizations. Four proposals for CP Carga, a proposal to EMEF

Antonio Pedro Ferreira

Government today received four proposals for the privatization of CP Carga and one for Emef, found the Express. Proposals are industrial and financial. Learn who

The government today received four private proposals for the CP Carga: Cofihold, MSC, Springwater and Athena. As for the EMEF came just a proposal, Alstom. The two companies currently belong to the universe of CP.

This information was cleared by Express and have not been communicated officially. The proposals were delivered until 17 pm today, limit open competition by the state to the private delivery of these two companies.

Four fight for CP Carga

Proposals for CP Carga are divided between industrial and financial operators.

The Cofihold is the core shareholder that controls the Cofina, Altri and F. Ramada, being led by industrial Paulo Fernandes. MSC is also an industrial operator, who descended from the group of "shiping" international MSC and that Portugal manages a container operation. Already the Springwater and Athena are large international investment funds.

Emef receive a single proposal

Already EMEF, Empresa Railway Equipment Maintenance, the state received only one proposal, the international operator Alstom.

Expectations for these two companies are a fit for the relatively low state, taking into account the results of empresas.Em 2014, the CP Carga and EMEF made profits of € 5.3 million and € 0.9 million respectively . Historically, however, the two companies are loss-making. In the case of CP Carga, profits last year were achieved with assets sale.

The following is the analysis of the proposals. Government moves so with two of the last privatization operations, after the favorable decision for sale of 61% of the TAP consortium Humberto Pedrosa and David Neeleman.

Rehabilitation of the section Sernada do Vouga (Station & Train Depot)»Águeda

- It was inaugurated in 1914 and stayed the same till now, few repairs have been made since that time. On the last years the state of the track was so bad that in some places it was obliged to reduce the speed of the trains to 30 Km/h or 20 Km/h or even 10 Km/h;

- Now the funny part (or not):

1) Two sections of the line pass in heavily industrialized and demographic areas (Oliveira de Azemeis»Espinho & Águeda»Aveiro), but the line still remains the same since it was opened;

2) At railroad crossings, the train driver stop the train before the road, lets the ticket man out to lower the barriers, the trains passes the road, the ticket man rises the barriers and climb aboard the train.

It's amazing that a railway line of that kind still exists anywhere in Europe. What will the situation be after renovations?

Sorry for taking a while to answer.

After this rehabilitation, the status of the line and service……… will stay exactly the same.

This line could be define as patient in coma connected to the machines, is not dead but isn`t really alive, it`s struggling!!

Government sells CP Carga revenues of two million and closes privatization

Sale of the EMEF to Alstom is canceled due to a court complaint of Bombardier against the Portuguese State.

On the same day that the PS requested the Government to stop "immediately" with privatization, the executive Pedro Passos Coelho announced the sale of 100% stake in CP Carga the MSC group, with a cash inflow of two million euros for the State. This will be the amount payable for the shares of CP Carga and he add another EUR 51 million which will be used to take over the debts of the freight company to its "house mother", the CP, and IP - Infrastructure From Portugal.

It is a process of leaving the defeated Athena Equity Partner investment fund (held by entrepreneurs John Santos, Miguel Vítor Lencastre and Guégués) which proposed a 45.5 million euros and Cofihold, consortium which has common shareholders of Cofina , Altri and F. Ramada, which offered 30 million euros for CP Carga.

As revealed on Thursday the Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications, Sérgio Monteiro, at the briefing following the Council of Ministers approved the privatization, apart from the better-funded, there was a differentiating factor that weighed in choosing the MSC "The fact that the company has undertaken not to make unilateral revisions of the CP Carga prices with customers."

The 53 million euros that the MSC will pay for CP include the two million from the acquisition of shares (in March were valued in the company's balance sheet at 71 million), and another 51 million for "the acquisition of CP Carga loans and commitments capitalization of the company, "said Sérgio Monteiro. With that amount, it is expected that the MSC pay the accumulated debts of the CP load the CP and other costs to public entities such as the overdue amounts from the tipping fee to IP.

In some cases, the payment will be immediate, and others, will be done in accordance with the payment plans already agreed, according to information collected by the PUBLIC. Still, the liabilities of CP Carga, which in late March reached EUR 190 million (value but may have descended), will not be zero, but it has not been possible to determine the exact value at the time of sale.

The company headed by Aires St. Peter presented in the first quarter a loss of 2.3 million euros, down from 4.9 million in the same quarter. And according to the balance at the end of the first quarter had negative equity in almost 86 million euros. Now, to achieve these sales, the CP is preparing to transfer to the CP Carga ownership of several locomotives (which until now were rented to own CP Carga) worth 110 million euros. This will allow the company to pass the positive equity, found the PUBLIC. At the same time, as revealed Sérgio Monteiro, the MSC undertook further in its proposal to hold rental assets to CP amounting to 16 million euros.

The MSC, which now aims to be the largest railway operator of goods in the Iberian Peninsula, has the capacity "from the point of view of the experience of management and financial commitment, to provide growth conditions for CP Carga in a climate of labor peace," said the Sergio Monteiro. Already Fectrans, which brings together transport unions CGTP, has advanced in a statement that the privatization of CP Carga should be a "stimulus" for the "strengthening of rail fight because the government will continue on its path of destruction railway to the last minutes of its mandate. "

The date of signature of the sale agreement between CP and the MSC will be held in August, leaving after the winner get the proper permits, including the Competition Authority, taking into account that the MSC will go from the CP Carga customer the rail operator.

The privatization of CP Carga, which was first announced in 2011, was provided for in the financial assistance program for Portugal, unlike the privatization of EMEF. With the sale of freight company CP the Government finalizes a vast privatization program covering various sectors. The kick-off was given in 2011 by selling 21% of EDP to the Chinese of China Three Gorges. Three and a half years later, with overall around 9.3 billion revenue, the state had already left the energy sector (left him only a position of 7% in Galp represented in the form of convertible bonds) postal, waste and airport management. The controversial privatization of TAP also met its outcome in June (while waiting for the authorizations) and now closes the loop with the sale of the CP Carga.
