The Cascais Line, one of the suburban railway lines of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, is planned to have a huge, and needed, renovation:

Project Facts:
  • Municipalities: Lisbon, Oeiras, and Cascais
  • Developer: Governo de Portugal
  • Length: 25.5 Km
  • Max. Speed: 90 Km/h
  • Cost: 125.000.000€

The Cascais Line is part of the planned public investments in the rail network until 2021. That is the second line with more passengers in the country, behind the Sintra Line, and it's struggling for years with serious infrastructure and rolling stock problems.

With the confirmation of the rail investments planned in 2014, the Cascais Line already has a date to the resolution of the many problems affecting the railway today - in 2021, all the infrastructure must have gone through a massive renovation program that will cost more than 125 million euros.

It is very likely the renovation will be accompanied by a transition of the electrification to 25.000 Volts. Today, the Cascais Line is the only national line electrified with direct current (1500 V). Not only the electrification to 25.000 V permits using much more modest and easy to maintain traction installations, as decisively facilitates the selection options of the new rolling stock fleet.

All the trackside equipment will be replaced, and the signs will also be renewed and unified with the rest of the network. At the same time the security systems common to the rest of the network will be installed. The maximum speed will remain at 90 km/h, which is perfectly reasonable for an urban-oriented way as is the case.

New Aveiro-Mangualde Line will be built
Source: http://portugalferroviario.net/wordp...e-vai-avancar/

There will be 86 new kilometers of railway in the central-north part of Portugal. The new Aveiro-Mangualde line will see the light of day by 2021 and will rely on European funding - the application will be formalized next week in Brussels. This will only be performed if EU funds are allocated but judging by similar projects, notably in Spain, you can expect a positive opinion. Altogether, the new line will cost 675 million euros, ERTMS installation included.

This line is a very old ambition and fulfills several different goals, including the reintegration of Viseu on the national rail network. The district capital, which is the largest European city without railway at present, will have after more than 30 years of absence the return of trains to the city and will be part of a new and functional axis that will connect cities as Salamanca, Mangualde, Viseu and Aveiro.

The new 86 Km line will have to overcome the difficult topography of the terrain and will follow parallel to the A25 motorway. Numerous works of engineering will be built because, beyond the difficult terrain, the line will have to comply with the required geometric patterns: top speed of 200 Km/h and a maximum of 15 mm/meter ramp. This will enable not only the reintroduction of passenger trains in Viseu, as it will accelerate the Beira Alta axis in either Lisbon's or Porto's direction, which will bring closer a region to others that exercise a strong influence - particularly through their universities.

For freight traffic, the new line will represent not only a shortcut to reach the ports of Aveiro and Leixões, which are the major direct beneficiaries of this project, but also represent the possibility of increasing the productivity of these trades, since the new line will allow train loads far bigger than the current line between Pampilhosa and Mangualde allows.

(...)

The new line will be electrified to 25.000 Volts / 50 Hz and will feature ETCS traffic control systems and multipurpose sleepers enabling rapid migration to 1,435mm gauge. The intersection with the North Line will be made next to Cacia Railway Station, north of Aveiro.

(...)

The construction of a new line between Mangualde and Salamanca was excluded.

So, these are the new plans:

-Electrification of Caíde-Marco de Canaveses (Linha do Douro).
-New freight line Sines-Grândola.
-New line Évora-Elvas and electrification Elvas-Spanish border.
-Upgrade and electrification of Nine-Viana do Castelo-Valença-Spanish border (Linha do Minho).
-New line Mangualde-Viseu-Aveiro.
-Electrification of Meleças-Torres Vedras-Caldas da Rainha (Linha do Oeste).
-Upgrade and electrification of Covilhâ-Guarda, including new chord at Guarda (Linha da Beixa Baixa).
-Upgrade of Vilar Formoso-Guarda-Mangualde-Pampilhosa, including new chord at Pampilhosa (Linha da Beira Alta).
-Electrification of Tunes-Lagos and Faro-Vila Real de Santo António (Linha do Algarve).
-Upgrade and reelectrification (25 kV) of Lisboa Cais do Sodré-Cascais (Linha de Cascais).
-Electrification of Ourique-Neves Corvo freight branch (and I presume Funcheira-Ourique too?).

Not a few things... wonder what will end up being done from this list.

1) Already being done!! [deadline: December of 2016]

2 & 3) it will probably be made;

4) it will be made, slowlyyyyy!!

5, 6, 7 & 8) i have my doubts in the near future!!

9) they have to do something soon or close the line!!

10) Electrification of Ourique-Neves Corvo freight branch probably yes, but the the rest between Funcheira-Ourique most likely no!!

Electrification of the Minho Line launch Tuesday

The Infrastructure Portugal announced on Monday it had approved the contract of Minho Line electrification, the section between Nine and Viana do Castelo. The launch of the contest will be published in the Official Gazette on Tuesday official source of the Ministry of Planning.

The tender base value will be 21.5 million euros, which will pay the "electrification of change Nine (exclusive) / Viana do Castelo (inclusive), a total length of 43.6 kilometers, running service stations and adequacy of work and improvement of operating conditions, " said the Infrastructure Portugal, in a statement.

The work will take a year and a half to complete. At this time, the line is single track (does not allow the crossing of trains, as in Northern line) and is not electrified. Nevertheless, the company says, "registers high circulation flow" and is "set in a predominantly rural environment but also to areas of urban characteristics with high population density, especially near stations and halts." At this time, the maximum speed is 120 kilometers per hour.

Electrification of the railway line of Minho is an old complaint and northern region of Galicia. After promises by successive governments, two weeks ago, the general meeting of the Atlantic Axis, the Minister of Planning Pedro Marques repeated the commitment. "Even in February we will launch the tender for the completion of works in the Nine-Viana stretch," he said.

An official source of the ministry assured the JN that the launch of the contract will be published in the Official Gazette on Tuesday. In the general meeting, the minister referred to later improve the section between Castle and Valencia Viana. "Between 2017 and 2018 we will have structural works on the electrification of these two sections and resolving various constraints related to the quality and speed of passenger transport, but also of goods," he said.

After the tests with success of yesterday, the company will launch the new service May 01 between Lisbon and Guimaraes at 3:50 a.m.. According to CP, the interest lies in the connection service to Trofa, Santo Tirso and Guimarães, which together represent about 270,000 inhabitants.

P.S.: the Guimarães Line was a metric gauge line (1000mm) converted to iberian gauge (1668mm)in 2004 but without track corections!

I always wondered if it would be possible to convert the Cascais line into metro standard and link it up with the green line. Apart from the lack of money for a project this size, is it technically doable?

Honestly, i never heard that possibility, not even in internet forums like this!!

What I can tell you is that there are plans to change the electric corrent of the line from 1500 V to 25 kV so to be able to replace the rolling stock of the Cascais Line that it is in very bad shape, it is very old (i think with 60 years), for others trains that are being used on the rest of the portuguese railroad network!!

Is it a dumb idea or would it possibly increase intermodality and usage? Would it not be possible to create a ramp before the cais de sodré station and connect to the metro there? (I know I am spending money that is not available but one can dream and imagine)

I think that everything is possible if you wanted!! They managed to build the Terreiro do Paço station near to the Tagus River (even with some problems)!!

Some years ago the politicians from Lisbon county wanted that the Cascais Line to be lowered down and be underground when it enter the Lisbon city limits. For what i remember it would be very expensive!!
