A post-war abomination called Schimmelpfeng-Haus.

Current demolition (the building was partly demolished and temporarily reonvated for the Zoofenster before, that's the rather fresh facade you can see here):

Backstein, DAF

The demolition of Schimmelpfeng-Haus at Zoo continues fast (pic from last week, next to recently finished Zoofenster / Waldorf=Astoria Berlin):

The top four floors of the old one were pretty good looking, actually. You can't say it won't be missed because that's exactly what the people who demolished historic buildings in the 60s once said.

At least its replacement is nice.

It was a landmark. But I have no idea why authoritys thought it should be preserved for future generations.

But in general I agree with you. We should be more careful with our judgements about the architecture of our grandparents than the generations in the sixties. Not everything what is old fashioned today is bad.

Sure. No one would ever want to tear down Café Kranzler (ok, you would...) or Berlin's TV tower. Or the Karl-Marx-Allee / Frankfurter Tor.

But aside these landmarks, there's loads and loads of average garbe, like the Schimmelpfenghaus. It had some nice details, but it didn't serve its function well and blocked the square from the street. An urban mistake in every breathe it took.

I'm glad that it's finally gone.

I think the project is ready for shifting into "under construction".
