Wow, i didn't expect Marseille to be like this. I was strongly influenced by some friends from Paris who described Marseille as hell...like Paris was the safer place on earth

BTW great projects and beautiful city. Plan to go there asap, it's not even so far from Bologna!

Well let's say that the city is still trying to recover from the 70's oil crisis that badly impacted the activity of its port and our local economy. Besides, there has always been kind of a rivarly between Marseilles and Paris.
I should open a thread on the Marseille Euromediterranée's project (one of Europe's biggest renovation project) that has been reshaping the city for the past decade.

Here are a few updates of the MUCEM and la VILLA MED by JML 13 (posted on the French section of SSP).

Here's a funny "trompe l'oeil" that is being installed on the Palais de la Bourse main entrance:

And its trompe l'oeil:

There will be several in the city this year. I'll post pictures in the coming weeks.

Renovation of Saint-Victor Abbey

Founded around 415 by Jean Cassien, the Saint-Victor abbey in Marseille was a notable religious centre before being destroyed in the 8th century by barbarian invasions. From the end of the 12th century to the 13th the abbey would be entirely rebuilt according to the regulations of Roman builders.

It was Guillaume de Grimoard, then abbot of Saint-Victor, who ensured the abbey’s fortification. The Revolution would transform the church into a filling station, a prison and later a barracks, thanks to which would escape demolition.

The famed abbaye Saint-Victor would return to religion under the first empire and be restored in the 19th century. The church became minor basilica in 1934, an initiative of Pope Pius XI.

The New York Times ranked Marseilles as the n°2 city (right after Rio de Janeiro) to visit in 2013.

Quote:
The 46 Places to Go in 2013
Whether you travel to eat or shop, surf or ski, new adventures await.

The European Capital of Culture designation (two cities get the title annually) often spotlights a destination that has become an up-and-comer on its own merits in the last few years, which is certainly the case with this ancient port town on the Mediterranean. A vibrant ethnic melting pot, Marseille is also home to an increasing number of contemporary art and avant-garde performances. Exhibition spaces include the 2,000-seat Le Silo, a landmark granary that’s been transformed into a theater; the Panorama, an ex-tobacco factory now home to modern installations; and J1, a hangar on the old port that will host a number of events. While in town, book into a stylish hotel like the four-bedroom Casa Honoré or the new cheap chic Mama Shelter Marseille. — Ondine Cohane

Are the projects on time? As pictures here demonstrate, major projects in the harbour, around the cathedral and across the whole city are still work in progress. Were they originally intended to be completed by now? And when are they expeted to be finished now?

I think Marseille is a nice place, but you clearly see that it has some rough side. You also see that in the center a lot of effort has already put into renewal of formerly rundown corners. Unlike other major cities, the center is not totally gentrified yet, far from it however. That makes the city appear more authentic which is what I like about it.

Hi Slartibartfas,

Yes, most projects are on time and most of them are alreday open (Tour Panorama, J1, Musée Cantini, Musée Granet, Camps de Milles, Musée Borély, Vieux Port and so on).

A few of them will open in the coming months though:

-Musée Regards de Provence will open in February
-La Villa in March
-Frac in April
-Palais Longchamps Fine Arts Museum in May
-and MUCEM and the museum of the old Marseille in May-June for the peak season.

The MUCEM, la Villa and the Frac are 2 or 3 months delayed as initially scheduled. Organizers are expected that it will continue to create a buzz around that event with the various openings till June and will continue to attract people to come visit the city.
Also, let's not forget that among all European capital of cultures so far, Marseille Provence is the one that invested the most on new cultural facilities (nearly 660 million euros).

A little bit more than 450,000 people were on the streets of Marseilles yesterday night for the opening ceremony.

Thanks for the answer. Good to know that the big hitters will be finished at least somewhat in time. I also see that the pedestrian square at the vieux port is open already.

But what about the development directly around/below the cathedral? Whats its status and if its not already, when is it going to be finished?

PS: The investment there is definitely huge and one to last.

It depends which projects you are referring to. If you are alluding to the plazza in front of the Cathedral, half of it has already been renovated.

Here it is:

The remaining half (please see pictures below) is currently being renovated and should open by mid 2013.

In regards to the shopping mall "below" the Cathedral which is called "les voûtes de la major": http://voutesdelamajor.com/
There has been some severe delays. They pretend that they will be able to deliver the project by the last quarter of 2013 but I doubt they'll be ready on time. I guess it will open by early 2014.

The main reason of these delays is that there were way too many projects under construction in that area and they were fearing that it would have damaged the foundation of the cathedral (not only the "Major Cathedral" but also the "old Major" (one of Marseilles' oldest monument).
Indeed, the cathedral is located right in front of the "cité de la méditerranée" (where 3 museums were under construction (MUCEM, La Villa and Regards de Provence)) and just above the "boulevard du littoral" where they had to destroy an highway, dig a tunnel and dismantle some ugly portuary infrastructures.
For your reference, there is also another big shopping mall (a bit like Mare Nostrum in Barcelona) currently under construction on le "boulevard du littoral" called les "Terrasses du Port" (http://www.terrasses-du-port.fr/) which will open in 2014. Not to mention the project launched by Constructa on "les Docks du boulevard du littoral" (http://www.les-docks.fr/fr_FR/index.php).

Here are a few photos to make it easier to understand:

This was the boulevard till the early 2000 (basically there was an highway on top of it...)

This was the boulevard in 2011

Project

This a the boulevard nowadays:

Thank you Douly for that very detailed information. I have a much better idea of the projects in this area. Yes it was the shopping mall below the cathedral that I was thinking of which looked like it were significantly delayed. I can perfectly understand the reasons for it though. Its a pity that the upper square could not be finished before the beginning of 2013, but first half of 2013 is fair enough.
