Everything looks great.

I've been to Marseille in summer 2012, which was not a good choice as almost all cultural venues were closed for renovation works and the city centre was hell because of the redevelopments. I still had a cracking vacation, though. If you want to go, attend some events, visit some of the new fancy venues, and have a good time in general, don't hesitate. The reality is much better than the reputation. It looked safe to me, even when walking through the centre at night, and the only time a stranger stopped me, it was to offer help (I was the classic helpless tourist looking lost on a map).

Thanks for your comments and for the video.

Here are two photos of the Old Port with the new "shade structure" being installed:

It will probably be the equivalent of the "bean" in Chicago.

A quick focus on la Vieille Charité. One of my favourite building in Marseille. Located right in the middle of le Panier (Marseille's oldest neighborhood), this building hosts 2 museums:

Update: Museum Regards de Provence (opening in early March)

Opening of the extension of the Palais du Pharo: (this weekend)

Palais du Pharo is Marseilles' second convention center. Le Palais du Pharo in Marseille was built in 1858 as a residence for Napoleon III.
Boasting two vasts underground auditorium (1,000 seats and 300 seats), it is one of the 3 main conference and exhibition centres of the city today.

The view of the harbour and coastline has powerful allure. It invites one to take a stroll in the Emile Duclaux garden surrounding the palace on its headland like a balcony over the sea…

Short Video:

Grand re-opening of Musée Cantini (February 15th, 2013)

This beautiful hôtel particulier was created in 1694 for a marine trading company. It passed through various hands before being acquired by the industrialist and art-lover Jules Cantini, who bequeathed to to the city. It became an art gallery in 1936.
A sweeping mosaic-tiled forecourt and high-ceilinged hallway usher you into a spacious house which provides an elegant, supremely peaceful backdrop to a small but discerning collection. The Musée Cantin also regularly hosts major temporary exhibitions.
Nouvelle: Closed for over a year for restoration, the Musée Cantini re-opens on 15 February with a show dedicated to the Chilean surrealist Roberto Matta (1911-2002) as part of the programme for Marseille-Provence 2013 European Capital of Culture.

Marseille's ranked n°2 as 2013 top destinations rankings by the NYT and National Geographic

Quote:
N°2: Marseille: On the mediterranean, Art and plenty of it!

The European Capital of Culture designation (two cities get the title annually) often spotlights a destination that has become an up-and-comer on its own merits in the last few years, which is certainly the case with this ancient port town on the Mediterranean. A vibrant ethnic melting pot, Marseille is also home to an increasing number of contemporary art and avant-garde performances. Exhibition spaces include the 2,000-seat Le Silo, a landmark granary that’s been transformed into a theater; the Panorama, an ex-tobacco factory now home to modern installations; and J1, a hangar on the old port that will host a number of events. While in town, book into a stylish hotel like the four-bedroom Casa Honoré or the new cheap chic Mama Shelter Marseille. — Ondine Cohane

France’s new capital of culture

On a once derelict jetty, opposite the stone ramparts of 17th-century Fort St. Jean, a new glass-and-steel building shimmers behind a lacy spider’s-web facade of finely cast concrete. Poised between lapis sea and Marseille’s sun-drenched hills, the National Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (MuCEM) stands at the entrance to the Vieux-Port, the city’s historic heart. And when it opens in May 2013, MuCEM will be a bold symbol of Marseille’s reemergence as a flourishing pan-Mediterranean hub.

Cities may rise and fall, but the great ones—and Marseille is among them—always rise again. Founded by ancient Greeks, France’s second largest city was already 500 years old and a bubbling stew of many cultures when Caesar laid siege in 49 B.C. A 20th-century wave of immigrants from Algeria and some other former French colonies led to Marseille’s modern reputation as a city far removed ethnically and psychologically from the rest of France. Despite recent headlines about drug-related crime, Marseille still stands tall as a world-class city.

These days Marseille has every right to act the cagou (slang for a show-off) as it and the surrounding Provence region assume the role of 2013 European Capital of Culture. “There is a new energy in the city, especially in music, theater, and museums,” says MuCEM director Bruno Suzzarelli. Young, multiethnic crowds gather for cutting-edge happenings at La Friche la Belle de Mai, a tobacco factory turned art and performance center. Major renovations have polished up many of the city’s 20-plus museums, including the Musée Cantini, whose trove of Picassos and Mirós is housed in an elegant 1694 town house. For all the new energy, Marseille’s old pleasures remain as alluring as ever: a stroll along the narrow lanes of the Panier Quarter, the lusty aromas of a good bouillabaisse, a boat ride into the fjordlike inlets called calanques. It’s no wonder that visitors are becoming fadas (big fans) of France’s southern gateway. —Christopher Hall

Le Silo: concert hall

Quote:
The Silo d’Arenc was built in 1926 and became a listed heritage building in 2004. Initially the building was used to store and process wheat. Today, it has become a symbol of Marseille’s industrial past. The city of Marseille has chosen to transform this building into a new space for living, working and enjoying cultural events. The spectacular 2000-seat concert hall, with three balconies overlooking the sea, hosts events throughout the year. Around a third of the surface area has been transformed into offices for technology companies and cultural organisations.

FRICHE DE LA BELLE DE MAI - PART 1 (Centre for Conservation and Resources of the MUCEM)

image hosted on flickr

FRICHE DE LA BELLE DE MAI: An approach unlike any other in Europe, dedicated towards developing all the creative

Marseille has redeveloped a disused industrial area owned by the National Public Tobacco Company, devoting it entirely to the audiovisual, multimedia and digital industries. This project has been implemented by the European Union, the French State, the PACA Région (Regional Authority) & the Urban Community of Greater Marseille.
The 150,000 m2 site, centred around three buildings - the Heritage Centre, Media Park and La Friche - the ideal incubator for developing creative relationships. Every day artists, dancers, musicians and producers rub shoulders with leading designers, producers, publishers and content distribution houses, not to mention consultants, technical service providers, marketing and promotion companies

Quote:
The MuCEM will have at its disposal the Centre for Conservation and Resources located in the Belle de Mai district, near the Saint-Charles railway station. Designed by architect Corinne Vezzoni and born of a public-private partnership, it will house, over 13,000 m², all of the reserve collections of the museum as well as its documentary holdings, library and scientific archives. The facility will be open to heritage professionals, researchers and students. The general public will also be able to visit part of the reserve collection by appointment.

The first objective of the centre is, of course, to support the principal missions of the museum: to store, preserve, study, document, maintain and develop the collections. To this end it will offer modern storage facilities meeting the standards for preventative conservation, workshops for preparation and restoration, a photography studio and an anoxic chamber for treatment to prevent the risk of infestations...

Beyond these essential functions, the centre aims to become a living space, a real tool for the enhancement and dissemination of the collections through an active policy of loans and deposits. It will also be a working tool for researchers and students by making entire collections and holdings of the MuCEM accessible.
Opened in Novembre 2012.
