Marseille has redeveloped a disused industrial area owned by the National Public Tobacco Company, devoting it entirely to the audiovisual, multimedia and digital industries.
I never really understood, can one do anything here as a visitor? Or only if you're a creative, then you can do your thing there.

I have been to Marseille twice in 2011 and 2012. I was astonished by its beauty. Marseille is really one of the most underrated cities in Europe.

It was originally created as a big residence for artists. A sort of Villa Medecis for street and contemporary artists. It became year after year Marseille's cultural mecca and probably a unique cultural complex in Europe. Therefore, visitors are more than welcome to visit the free gallerys, the new contemporary art museum la "Tour Panorama", have lunch there, go to a concert at le Cabaret aléatoire or at la Cartourcherie, visit the movie studios, work at the incubator and Media Park and study at the Heritage Center. Youngsters can go there for Festivals (Marsatac, this is (not) music, Festival MIMI), for its skate park and so on...
It is worth visiting!

More info below:

The 150,000 m2 site, centred around three buildings - the Heritage Centre, Media Park and La Friche - the ideal incubator for developing creative relationships. Every day artists, dancers, musicians and producers rub shoulders with leading designers, producers, publishers and content distribution houses, not to mention consultants, technical service providers, marketing and promotion companies…

1/ The Heritage Centre:

Helping us find out where we came from, so that we may better understand where we are going: that is the mission of this centre, which houses three major institutions for heritage preservation. Equipped with state-of-theart technology, the Inter-Regional Centre for Heritage Preservation and Restoration (CICRP) researches, recommends and implements innovative measures and techniques for the restoration of artwork, much of which comes from the Louvre or the Château de Versailles.

The INA (National Audiovisual Institute) Méditerranée collects, preserves, manages and commercialises regional public TV and radio programmes with the aim of promoting and diffusing the audiovisual history of both Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Corsica. INA Méditerranée is also collaborating with the owners of national television archives throughout the Mediterranean, with a view to creating a Euro-Mediterranean documentary library. Finally, the Archives de la Ville de Marseille compiles, protects and showcases documents and collections recounting the 2,600 year history of the oldest city in France.

2/ Media Park: http://www.belledemai.com/

Created in 2004, this 23,000 m2 Media Park hosts for the Marseille Studios, built and managed by Groupe TSF, Groupe Image and Les Films du Soleil. in this studio is shot France's most watched TV soap opera “Plus Belle la Vie” (6 million viewers every night), produced by France 3 and TelFrance.

A local 24-hour television broadcaster, La Chaîne Marseille (LCM), has also chosen to house its stages, journalists and technicians in the Media Park. Furthermore, the surrounding professional associations (Cinéma au Soleil, MedMultimed…) and support structures aimed at newly-established and developing businesses (Incubateur Multimédia, Marseille Innovation…), have helped generate the perfect conditions for the installation and growth of over thirty companies, including: Cityvox, Mobile Distillery, Mail in Black, TSF, Kezia, Néocom Multimédia, zeVisit, Euro Rscg 360...

3/ "La Friche"

image hosted on flickr

Since the early 1990s, the 65,000 m2 site of la Friche has been a centre for contemporary cultural and artistic activities of all types including: resident theatre troupes, cabaret, circus and theatre, modern musicals, dance, cinema, visual and digital arts, artistic workshops and exhibitions…

The goal of the centre is to put artists back into the heart of the city. Today, almost 80 companies have relocated here, representing some 500 professionals. La Friche has developed 280 international partnerships, organises 1000 events and delivers 50,000 hours of training each year. It hosts 1,200 artists and more than 400,000 spectators and visitors on an annual basis.

The site is also home to ‘La Cartonnerie’, a 2,600 m2 entertainment centre, 250 m2 rehearsal studio and 600 m2 restaurant/book store in addition to office space.

It also hosts le cabaret aléatoire, one of Marseille underground concert hall.

More info: www.cabaret-aleatoire.com

To make it more accessible to the rest of the city and to inhabitants from the Belle de Mai district (one of Marseille's poorest neighbourhood), they openened a skate park, a nursery school and host free cultural events all year long.

And finally, the latest urban development at la Friche Belle de Mai for the 2013 European Capital of Culture title:

4/ La Friche La Belle de Mai Arts Centre / Tour Panorama

The projects at the Friche La Belle de Mai Arts Centre embody new trends in cultural development and artistic expression. As an important centre for resident artists, the Arts Centre and associated cultural organisations have developed two joint projects for 2013: the Lieu Déconfortant (Discomposing Space) and the Contemporary Art Cartel: La Tour Panorama.

@ Erbse: Ouch too bad you don(t like them. You should come see most of these projects with your own eyes. Most of them are pretty breathtaking.
In the coming weeks, I will make some comparison posts with "before and now" so that you can see the improvements of the city.

hello jex7844, MARSEILLE is an unpopular french city.
Media prefers to speak about delinquence that about the incredible transformation of this city.
You have délinquence in others suburbs too. Furthermore I will say to our friend from Mecklenburg that I visited Mecklenburg too......and Marseille Côte d'Azur has nothing to envy.
Marseille has 2600 years of history and its streetcar/tramway has not a rotten design. marseille is unique with his creeks/calanques, its islands, its Mediterranean atmosphere. It is necessary to go to Marseille and please don't listen to our media. best regards.

Why do you even refer to Mecklenburg, vonbingen? I didn't compare anything as there's nothing to compare here. Mecklenburg and Pomerania are totally different from the Marseille area and are beautiful and unique in another way. The spa architecture of the German Baltic coast for instance is unrivaled in the world.

It's just that I don't like these modernist projects featured in this thread, that don't show any respect to the history and wonderful cityscape of Marseille.
That's too bad, really!

The Voûtes de la Major shown in #86 looks rather promising, though.

Just a different point of view, in my opinion they absolutely respect historicity of Marseille. I'm glad to see, that Marseille's reinventing itself.

@ Erbse: I agree that some of these projects may seem a bit too modern but the city really needed to rebrand itself.
On the other hand, they are also renovating a lot of older monuments and plazza. Such as this one: "Place de Lenche"

I'll try to post more photos in the coming weeks.

thanks very much Douly for your pics of Marseille.
what's happening in this city is unique, giant,
because Marseille came from far.
Personally I really believe in this city and some shots of kalachnikovs will not change my positive opinion about the real fabulous revival of this city.

and i don't like media, i am not naïve : sensationalism and bad news are their business.

Erbse, I have to disagree with you on Marseilles. I think the urban renewal that has been going on there for a decade or longer is a great thing for the city and its urban landscape.

You should not forget that also countless historic buildings are being renovated and whole squares are vitalized again. Moreover the city is a bit rough around the edges anyway. So contrasts are something very natural in this city. And those few radically modernist buildings are IMHO mostly of good quality and do not create a negative overall impression.
