NKG | Nanjing Lukou International Airport

From Wikipedia

Nanjing Lukou International Airport (IATA: NKG, ICAO: ZSNJ) is the main airport serving Nanjing, capital of China's Jiangsu province. The airport is located in suburban Jiangning District, over 35 km south of the city center.
Nanjing is a focus city of China Eastern Airlines. In 2010, Nanjing airport handled 12,530,515 million passengers and 234,000 tonnes of freight, making it the 10th busiest by cargo traffic, and the 13th busiest by passenger traffic in China.
Lukou Airport was opened on 28 June 1997, replacing Nanjing Dajiaochang Airport as the main airport serving Nanjing. Dajiaochang Airport is still used as a military air base.[1]
Current airport masterplans call for the building of a second passenger terminal and a second runway and taxiway system by 2013 (Phase 2), raising its capacity from the current 12 million passengers annually to 30 million, along with the ability to handle 800,000 tonnes of air freight by 2020.[2]

Long term plan for the airport, including Phase 3 which includes T3 and a third runway, and Phase 4 which includes two more satellite terminals, T1 expansion, and a fourth runway.

They are truly hard at work expanding this airport. I was about to say it looks like a small airport for such a big city, obviously someone already knows that.

I guess all the other airports in the Yangtze River Delta cities and the HSRs largely compensated for the capacity shortage of this airport.

Exactly, lots of travelers from Nanjing opt for going through Hongqiao since it's only a little over an hour away on HSR. I assume the airport will become much more accessible to Nanjing residents once the suburban rail and T2 are completed. Much of Lukou's traffic actually come from Anhui cities such as Ma'anshan.

While NKG's 13million pax traffic means it didn't even make to the top ten in China, it's cargo traffic did. It's home to the China Postal Airlines, and Singapore Airlines Cargo has direct flights to the Continental US.

T2 construction is going pretty well, the basic structure of the terminal, concourse, and related transportation hub are taking place.
