Yet another New York Thread.

Oh look, I'm starting it off with a picture of One World Trade Center. Isn't that original?

All kidding aside, here's the backstory: I'm about halfway through a three-week trip to New York. I've taken a temporary job canvassing for a state senate race, and I'm staying in a friend's apartment in Bed-Stuy while she's out of town.

If the temporary job turns into a permanent one, I'll be moving into said friend's spare room for a pretty-damn-amazing $450 a month. Life in Tampa hasn't worked out for me for the last thirteen years, so I hope I get the chance to make a new start here.

But enough about me. Taking pictures - and hopefully trying to find a side job or internship that involves doing it - is a large part of why I'm here in the first place. So more photos coming up soon. I just have to get them sorted out.

I work from 1 to 10 and am often too tired to get up before the afternoon on weekends, so a lot of my architectural photos are taken at night. Thankfully, I'm lucky to have a camera that can take some pretty awesome night shots.

Here's the first round of them:

8 Spruce, of course. Beautiful building, for a condo tower. Also serves as a pretty good navigational beacon for whenever you're lost on the lower east side.

No explanation needed for this next one. Taken right by the MoMA:

One thing I find weird about Manhattan is that despite the highest real estate value in North America, they still have all these random little stores popping up in places you'd never think they'd be able to afford.

Like this tacky little costume store right across from the Stock Exchange:

And this tumbledown flea market near NYU:

As a bonus, here are some that were taken mid-evening. (Last Saturday.)

Very well done - the perspective and lighting on #1 and #3 are excellent.

Thank you all very much. This is getting an even better reaction than I expected.

Anyway...

I've been doing "spontaneous portraits" recently. Basically, seeing someone interesting on the street, handing them a card, and asking to take a photo.

Today: Manhattan, Round 1:

Canal St.

Houston St.

Times Square

Financial District

He's looking up at 1WTC, BTW.

I saw this guy walking through the middle of the financial district with this "boombox," which - on a closer look, appears to be six cabinet speakers set into a suitcase - playing Taleb Kweli. Wall Street needs more people this awesome.

Bonus photo, at the South Ferry:

I've only had the chance to do this two or three times. It's pretty intimidating asking random NYers to stop and pose for a photo, so I usually only do it on weekends or in tourist destinations. But almost everyone's been nice so far - except that ventriloquist, who got pissed because I'd run out of tip money - and the results so far have been pretty cool, so I'll be doing it more.

In fact, it's Sunday and there's still plenty of daylight left (even though you can barely see it through the cloud cover), so that's probably how I'll spend this afternoon.

I didn't get out for long enough to take any good pictures today on account of the whole transit shutdown thing, but here are some more of the other ones.

Manhattan, round 2:

Times Square

Penn Station

Canal St. Station

Next up, street scenes.

Bump? Isn't that a bit of an understatement?

Dude, the sign told you to... Never mind.

Street photography, like I promised:

First up, Brooklyn! Still my favorite borough so far.

The Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges seen over the skywalk of the Watchtower Buildings.

More skywalks - these ones much cooler. (At the Fulton St. Macy's.)

I don't remember what street this is. It looks like Broadway, but Broadway is apparently nowhere near where I remember being at the time. Oh well.

From a parking garage on Livingston St.

And finally: lower Manhattan from Brooklyn Bridge Park:

Many more to come.

Sorry about the lack of updates. I've been going through a lot recently.

Anyway, I live here now, and here's something to make up for the absence:

Fantastic shots indeed! Definitely like the first picture you've posted, as well as the people shots! Those just show how great, vibrant, and resilient NYC and its people are, even after going through a terrible hurricane last November.
