This is my 'hood. An interesting fact about the church steeple in pic #27 is that it is brand new. When the church was built 150 years ago, they couldn't afford the steeple. It was recently designed and completed for a cost of $6 million. The unusual design is due to the fact that the church was built out of Connecticut brownstone, which is very unusual for the South, and for good reason. Brownstone does not hold up well in the Southern heat and humidity (and expensive to ship down). The church building could not support a standard steeple's weight, so it was designed out of copper mesh. Yet, it fits in quite well in the historic district.

Pic30. The blue/grey wooden house on the left is the oldest wood structure in charleston. Very Early 1700s.

Insanely good pics!
King St. may have been 'mallified' but I still see glimmers of good old fashioned grit.
