Good work Desertpunk.

Keep up the up-dates and keep safe yourself - even though you are far far way away but you never know with Hurricanes!

Hopefully, some SSC New York members might post the odd story/photo too.

Well, I got myself plenty of water, food, batteries, a stack of nice cigars, a bottle of rum and is waiting for guests from Brooklyn who are evacuating to my house. I am sure we will have a splendid time! Long live friendship and God Bless America!

3-6 ft. Sandy could easily double that in some areas. 11.7 ft predicted for the Battery.

President Declares State Of Emergency In New York State

image hosted on flickr

014 by MTAPhotos, on Flickr

Quote:
Today, President Obama declared a state of emergency for New York, which allows federal aid to help state and local response efforts—like evacuations and shelters—for Hurricane Sandy. This is what Governor Cuomo was hoping for!

From the White House press release:

"The President's action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives and to protect property and public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in all counties in the State of New York.

Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Emergency protective measures, limited to direct federal assistance, will be provided at 75 percent federal funding.

W. Craig Fugate, Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, named Philip E. Parr as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area."

Governor Cuomo said, "Once again, I thank the President for his quick response to my request for a federal emergency declaration which will apply to the entire State of New York. We appreciate the federal government’s support as we continue to prepare for Hurricane Sandy."

Connecticut is losing power

Gray Area in link below is owned by United Iluminating, darker colors: more % of people out.

So far 10,000 people out of power, and the hurricane center is 400 +/- miles away

http://www.cl-p.com/outage/OutageMap.aspx

And for people in that gray area: click the link:

Trumbull/Fairfield is losing power.

Because of the zone Sandy impacts, they say, that Sandy might cause more damage then Katrina did. Katrina was the most expensive storm ever with 145 billion USD in damages.

Over at SSP, Carlos reported from floodings of the Gantry State Park, and the cameras of the 432 Park Avenue construction sites are already swaying heavily.

I fear this is the falsely predicted storm Irene was considered to be.

Hopefully there wonīt be high floodings in the Battery, since that might cause floodings of the WTC site and itīs subway system, which would be heavily damaged because of the salty water. This all would push back the construction of the site months back.

NHC update:

minimum pressure: 943 mb
maximum sustained winds: 90 mph (150 kph)

And still enough time to gaining strength before hitting land!

I live about 8 feet above sea level and when I left my house at 8:15 this morning water levels were a tad elevated, but nothing I haven't seen before. I'm skeptical of the surge being as high as some people here are saying.

Not gonna happen. New York City is above sea level, not below it like New Orleans. Subway could flood through vents but I don't see how the WTC site ever floods. The top of the bath tub is pretty high above sea level.
