WOW

Certainly more impressive and cutting edge than any airport in America --- in a city I have never even heard of! The pace of development in CHina is mind-bending.

Thanks for the post and pictures, Big-Dog! That is an enormous, amazing airport. But 31 km away from town? Why do Chinese cities build their airports so far out? It's like a subsidy to taxi drivers. Will this airport have a metro rail link?

I think it's not easy to get such a large piece of land near the city. Metro line, line 8's space is reserved (see first rendering), but the construction time is not available yet (Only line 1 is U/C in Hefei).

You always have to consider future growth of Chinese cities: Areas which are now in the outskirts could be right in the city in 20 years.

True, people often ignore the "real" Western China, maybe because it's mainly desert and mountains.
For example Chengdu or Chongqing are often considered as Western China, but if you look at the map they're right in the middle of China.

Xinqiao Airport to open on Feb 25th 2013, along with the new airport expressway

Quote:
Xinqiao Airport to Open Soon
Pub Date: 12-10-29 15:41 Source: www.cnanhui.org

In the 14th plenary meeting of Hefei municipal government on October 27, Mayor Zhang Qingjun revealed that Xinqiao International Airport (referred to as the "Xinqiao Airport) would open to traffic before the Spring Festival at the earliest, trying to conduct test flights within this year.

As a domestic trunk airport, Xinqiao Airport has a capacity of 11 million passenger throughput per year after completion and is designed for all types of aircraft in the world take-off and landing, which have been put into commercial operations, except Airbus A380.

Currently the civil construction of Xinqiao Airport has basically completed, and systems of air conditioning, broadcasting, and baggage transfer have been installed into a trial phase. Only eight security channels at Luogang Airport, there are 31 at Xinqiao Airport, which also has 84 ticket counters and 24 self-service check-in counters.

All airlines are preparing for the "transition", ready at any time, according to one airline's Anhui branch company. On that day, when the last flight lands, all departments, operating units, aircraft without passengers and cargoes will transfer to Xinqiao International Airport, all personnels and equipments should be in place before next day's first flight arrival.

Generally speaking, the test flight should continue for some time to make sure equipments and signals being accurate. Any direction's signal problems will cause more adjustments and test flights until all equipments up to operational standards.

Where is Xinqiao airport located relative to existing high speed railways (Hefei-Nanjing, Hefei-Wuhan, Hefei-Bengbu)?
