Has this really topped out? It doesn't look like it.

It may have topped out at the core first but in this pic you can see some of the framing for the roof:

I'm sorry, but this is the ugliest building going up in NY right now. I don't understand how Foster could have designed something this ugly. If you disagree, could you explain to me why?
Here's hoping that the reality is different from the renderings.

I think the form is nice and modern, and it looks well in its surroundings...
A better question is, how is it ugly?

Can't believe this design belongs to Foster

It's no Hearst Tower, but I believe the quality of the materials in the facade will be its redeeming quality

It reminds me of other Midtown East (Murray Hill) condo buildings, and not in a good way. They're not awful, but they are a few decades old and weren't exactly starchitecture when they were new. I had expected something else from Foster + Partners. The shiny brown facade is also a bit of a throwback to the same era.

Take, for example, the Corinthian at East 38th:

(from a random real estate site)

Or Paramount tower at East 39th:

(from another real estate site)

These were just the first two I spotted in two minutes of browsing Google maps.

This thing went up amazingly fast, though.

I really doubt it will look like those. There's no brown in the design; the cladding is dark blue with some silver trim.

This building came out very nicely. It must be seen in person.

It would be hard to propose something ostentatious that would upstage the UN Building. Other towers proposed nearby had their heights lowered and designs placed under extra scrutiny in deference to the UN Secretariat. If Foster had designed something more dramatic it might have run into a buzzsaw. The UN is regarded by many as sacred space. Trump World Tower was built as of right which is the only reason it's much taller, but even with its understated design, it still attracted enormous opposition over being so tall near the UN.

Only in New York City can you have so many towers over 500' go unnoticed. I mean I lost count by now...
Freaking New York, it's a total monster and I surely believe its still the only city which it can't be compared with.

Arguably not one of his best. Good to see cladding appear on this thing. That will make it easier to judge.

I like the tower. It is definitely one of Fosters most modest designs.
