Slums seen on Street View
There are already a few threads about slums/ghetto's but those are only with images. So post here youre slums/ghetto's that are visible on Street View.
I noticed this one in Paris, and found it really shocking to see that people have to live in those conditions in Europe. ![]() Rue des Bateliers, Saint-Ouen, France https://maps.google.nl/maps?q=Rue+de...244.89,,0,5.25 Last edited by z0nnebril; November 11th, 2012 at 07:26 PM. |

The one in the OP is what the French calls a bidonville - a shantytown. It has since been cleared out. (If you exit the street view and look at the place from a bird's perspective, you can see that the whole pleace is now an empty lot.)

^ Yeah. Those are not an example of what Paris and its suburbs have to offer to their inhabitants. The "bidonvilles" are independent and self-sufficient living habitats made up by immigrants from the fringes of society: some of them beggers, some thiefs, some honest workers who cut down their costs with free accommodation. The authorities tolerate these places to a certain extent because if they clear them, they'll appear immediately in other parts; the people are European citizens, so they are not illegal immigrants and will return.
The "houses" are made mostly of cardboard, so I don't think they even qualify as "slums", which would be on a superior level of comfort. They are more like very practical and cheap forms of temporary settlements (like camping with tents). |

Rocinha has been a "luxury slum" for quite a while, as it is the largest favela in Rio, it recieves the most government attention. Nowadays, most of the houses have running water and electricity and the infrastructure is more developed. In addition, hundreds of small businesses are thriving inside the favela. Hell, they even have their own TV Station.

Looking at Rocinha it seems like parts are borderline acceptable, like along the main road, while the fringes up in the hills looks to be precarious and nearly inaccessible.

Japan's most dangerous, dirty and most likely poorest (10% of the district is homeless) is Kamagasaki in Osaka:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=%E9%8...3,,0,15.2&z=17 https://maps.google.com/maps?q=%E9%8...198.3,,0,10.35 Along that street there is drug trade http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamagasaki

Dale Farm - an illegally build squattar camp inhabited by Irish travellers, east of London:
In October 2011, the local council demolished half the site, leaving many families homeless and living on the side of the road. https://maps.google.co.uk/?ll=51.595...,161.5,,0,0.28 However local residents were fiercely opposed to the site, which they blamed on crime, antisocial behaviour and damage to the local environment. Gypsy/Traveller sites exist all over the UK on the outskirts of most towns. Either inhabited by Irish travellers or indigenous English Romany gypsies - the two communities are quite distinct. Some can be quite plush - with flashy cars parked outside neat prefab chalets. Others are little more than shanty towns. Exploring the Dale Farm site on Streetview presents a variety of these homes. Interesting the Google car went down there, normally outsiders wouldn't be able to just wander/drive around these Traveller sites. Last edited by britinparis; November 13th, 2012 at 02:14 PM. |

I don't know if you could call it a slum, but it's probably the closest thing we have to slums (especially for inner Sydney). Known as 'The Block' it refers to a block of housing in Redfern, Sydney. The block was purchased over a period of 30 years by the Aboriginal Housing Company for use as a project in Aboriginal-managed housing. For non-Aborigines, the Block has assumed a notorious reputation for violence and crime.
http://goo.gl/maps/8H6Fx http://goo.gl/maps/J7nK1 http://goo.gl/maps/p9fLs It's only very small, though, as you will see if you scroll around. |

So far the only legitimate slums posted are the ones in Brazil and SA.

The dirtiest, the biggest slums I have ever seen on StreetView are on Brazil, but we also have many in Europe but not so populated or extended like those in Africa or South America ( inc. Mexico which I pretty consider it a poor country).

Technically speaking, a "slum" is properly constructed housing that has been allowed to degrade to such an extent that the standard of accomodation is substandard - so the Australian example is probably the best. This is a different concept from a "shantytown" - shacks made of wood or corregated Iron - as in Paris, Romania or SA. Or more substantial but still illegally constructed dwellings, as in Brazilian "favelas", or my example of Traveller sites in England. |
