A 415m tower in Melb would look ridiculous and totally imbalance the skyline the way so many Asian cities have done to go the easy Supertall grab but not the money or demand to build an entire 400m skyline and make it look good ala Dubai Marina - so all you end up seeing in skyline photos is one big tall and a heap of tiny looking buildings.

Even the original 388m proposal for A108 would have dwarfed the skyline too much - instead this complements and raises the bar but doesn't overpower the existing skyline which will help give Melbourne one of the best balanced and shaped skylines in the world.

But yes the next step a few years down the track is to go even taller but that will only happen when PAN-OPS is lifted ..

Is the cloud around Melbourne really that low? And if I'm the one going to buy that penthouse, I will ask for a warranty that within a year, I should

I think 400m would make for a nice signature tower actually. In NY and Chicago there are 400+ meter buildings with much shorter buildings in the immediate vicinity and it doesn't look bad at all.

But glad to hear construction has started! Australia finally gets its first supertall

It ain't under construction yet. Just give it a few more months of demo and site clearing.

It deserves as much mention as Australia's second largest city

I disagree with keeping that shell of building facades. If they backfilled then ok, but it's serving no purpose.

I think those sort of buildings are very conducive to a people-friendly urban environment. When a skyscraper extends all the way to street level, the majority of the time it sucks the life out of the street with huge lobbies that are closed off from the public. I love seeing skyscrapers from a distance, and of course looking up at them, but they rarely add anything to the actual street scene.

Demolition is almost complete ..

Soil Testing is underway and piling should begin immediately after site is cleared in a couple of weeks. Excavation could be as deep as four levels all according to a report by lozza.

The facade was kept to retain some of the street level heritage of Southbank / South Melbourne - I don't mind it as long as it's integrated and treated well. Remains to be seen in the final development what the outcome is ..

I don't mind seeing them tear down the old facade and replacing it with something new, as long as there are retail bays open to the public. I totally agree with you on the way many office buildings simply kill street life by having one entrance and the rest of the streets-cape a closed facade.

As far as my opinions on the building. I love it, except for the gold boxes. I can live with them though as this is a new supertall and the rest of the building is great. Congrats Melbourne!

Yeah, the gold thing is really ugly and disrupts the form; it's clearly done to pander to the Chinese investors (just as they did with the Eureka). They love their auspicious gold and red. In some of the night time renders it didn't look as noticable though which is a plus I guess. Hopefully it blends into Southbanks burgeoning highrise scene; I know they have a lot more planned for that precinct.

Wrong. Eureka tower is designed in reference to the Eureka Stockade and the Gold Rush of the 1850's. Hence the name, Gold crown, the red stripe(blood spilt during the rebellion) and the white stripes of a prospectors measuring staff.

Gold panels on Eureka has nothing to do with pandering to the Chinese.(The building was completed way before the mass Chinese investing in Australian property began anyways)

Personally, I think it'll make or break the building but I'm erring on the side of it looking completely boring without the star-burst.
