I actually like the gold boxes- personally, I don't think the coloring/location on the tower are ideal, but without them, the building would be another nondescript blue obelisk. Then again, I would risk a potentially tacky design that would be unique and eye-catching over a safe, plain, filler building.

I agree with what seems to be most forumers here. The funny out of place thing up there just looks odd, not appropriate at all. Perhaps the structure's design just needs a little tweaking or dressing up above the 87 floor, maybe something like the random angled mullion type things on the side of the newly built "Theater Park" condo in Toronto or something, to make it meld better with the "Eureka" tower which does seem to work well as a whole and is pleasing to the eye as a design IMO.

https://urban.melbourne/development/...mmence-october

Australia's first supertall is set to commence construction in October (demo has already been completed) :-)

EDIT: *Proper supertall* to the roof not to a giant toothpick & framework adorned 245m building thanks Locke

Second supertall! Q1 is taller, it's a scientific fact

Q1 isn't a real supertall. It is a building shorter than Eureka with a big stick on top!
Kind of a shame that the original 400m+ design was canned, but oh well.

Work has begun on a giant skyscraper that will tower over the Melbourne skyline

A giant new landmark is climbing into Melbourne's skyline, as construction begins on the Australia 108 skyscraper.
This month, work started on the foundations of what will be the southern hemisphere's tallest apartment building.
Some residents could move into the tower as soon as 2018 while construction is still in full swing, as the project by Singaporean developer Aspial will be completed in five stages.
The Australia 108 skyscraper will be the tallest apartment building in Australia.
Apartment owners below level 41 are likely to get their keys from September 2018, when the building is less than half finished.

Another 15 levels or so will be opened every six months until the building is completed in late 2020.
Delays caused by strong winds and bad weather will be among the challenges for the builders as the tower creeps towards its final height of 319 metres.
Brookfield Multiplex regional managing director Graham Cottam said the building company would have to wait for calmer days – when the wind was blowing at less than 72km/h – to operate cranes.
"The building will be exposed to all the forces of nature after about level 60 because it will stick above the rest of the city," he said.
"We will definitely be delayed in our works and have allowed extra time [for this]".
At the peak of construction, about 550 people will work on the 70 Southbank Boulevard site.
The building and the lift system have been designed to allow for the staged handovers, with separate lobby areas for different areas of the tower.
Mr Cottam said Australia 108, like all skyscrapers, would be constructed with the flexibility to sway – in this case up to 60 centimetres.
The golden starburst feature at 210 metres, inspired by the Australian flag, will be prefabricated off site in components.
When completed, the mega-tower will be nine-storeys higher than the Eureka Tower, which has been Melbourne's tallest building since 2006 – though it's unlikely to remain so for much longer, with three larger skyscrapers in the pipeline.
Australia 108 will also become the nation's highest building. Although the Q1 Tower in the Gold Coast stretches to more than 322 metres, it is occupied only to 235 metres, with a huge spire making up the extra height.
The new Melbourne skyscraper will boast the "tallest" home in the southern hemisphere, a penthouse on level 100 recently sold off the plan to a Chinese businessman for $25 million.
The managing director of CBRE Residential, Andrew Leoncelli, said only 33 apartments of the original 1105 still remained on the market, with almost $1 billion worth of stock sold.
Mr Leoncelli said prospective buyers would need at least $2.5 million for one of the remaining properties, all luxury three-bedroom apartments, in the exclusive "Cloud Residences" above the 71st floor.
The cheaper apartments on the lower storeys, which sold for as little as $450,000, were snapped up within a few months of the official launch in February.
Australia 108, designed by Fender Katsalidis Architects, was originally planned to rise 108 floors and 388 metres but had to be cut back after it was revealed the building violated federal air-safety regulations for Essendon airport.
Unlike the Eureka, Melbourne's newest skyscraper giant will not have its own public viewing area.
During the next nine months, building work will focus on the tower foundation.

pretty sure that looks like construction of a sales centre, not the actual tower.

Have you ever seen a display suite requiring 60m deep foundation piles as those rigs in the picture are about to do ?

No I can categorically assure you that is the start of construction you are seeing. Those Lego blocks being cemented down would be forming the outline of the lift core.

Besides the display suite has been open since last Christmas and is now open only by appointment since the building has pretty much sold out ..

Good weather permitting the first actual piles should be dug out this week ..

Have you ever seen a sales centre requiring piles of those dimensions?
