Is it just me or does construction go very very quickly in Melbourne?

I would think that construction of skyscrapers all over the world is speeding up because of advancements in slipform technology and faster concrete pumps and cranes

Melbourne definitely seems to have faster construction, though; the speed at which some of the northern CBD towers recently went up (Eq and Lighthouse in particular) was ridiculous.

In the Australian forums there is many a poster that says the exact opposite, Melbourne towers are so slow during construction.

All Australian tower construction is unionised and unions here (unlike other parts of the world) actually do have strength.

All building and foundational work must meet certain standards. No short-cuts.

No construction can occur on extreme heat days or very wet days.

Pretty much all Australia towers use concrete construction, concrete core and concrete floors (these usually take longer to build than steel towers).

Australia 108 took a good 8 or so months just on foundations due to the ground conditions (a former swamp many decades ago). Floor progress once fully up to speed should be a floor a week. Total build will be five years (2015 to 2020).

Hence, construction speed on a world average is likely to be about the same as other like countries (Canada/UK) and slower than emerging countries (Gulf states, China).

Howerver, the Melbourne tower, Light House, was very very quick to go up. Most towers will not go up as fast as it.

317m above the street (this will be the official height of the tower).

319m above sea level (the ground is shallow at only +2m).

This should be referred to as a 317m building.

Great progress! Reminds me of the good old days when Eureka was under construction. Was equally excited looking at the lift core rise

Construction on a lot of skyscrapers seems really quick today. Salesforce Tower in San Francisco (326 meters) topped off a few days ago after having a height of just around 5 stories a year ago. So we can expect to seem similar speeds here (judging from the past photos) so it seems likely this tower will top off in the summer of 2018 (or possible even earlier!!!)
