I find what I was trying to say in relation to this building working well in its Melbourne [Southbank] setting is well illustrated in a reverse way in the Shanghai Tower [supertall U/C] thread.

The Pudong supertalls are each great buildings, but they have no design affinity to each other at all - so one is left with a Disneyland park feeling of very different skyscraper designs.

My point was that Australia 108 does have some design context with its neighbours and the Melbourne skyline style generally [see photo in previous post].

My eyes lit up when I saw this. The aussies are pretty good at skyscraper design but I was disappointed. Its probably deliberate but it has much of a similar to Eureka tower. The slim line top with a different coloured clad and the stepping effect towards the top. Its not great.

Its similarity to Eureka tower and its samey styling are what bring it down. Its only an opinion but a 'disneyland' skyline such as Beijing is way more eye catching and interesting I think most people would agree on that. Melbourne has 101 and 120 Collins street which look very similar and they make me grit my teeth when I see them in the same shot. They clash too much.

Interesting because I consider that the complementary 101 and 120 Collins st towers are melbourne's most defining skyline landmarks, and I love it.

I've always been a huge fan of the stuff that was built in Melbourne during the last couple of years, however this design is just horrible, particularly if you consider that this skyscraper will dominate the skyline.

I hope the design will get a bit streamlined by the time it is built.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle casts doubt on titanic tower he says could put Shrine of Remembrance in shadows

LORD Mayor Robert Doyle has raised fears that a building planned to be the tallest in the southern hemisphere could overshadow the Shrine of Remembrance.Cr Doyle, a Shrine trustee, said the 108-storey apartment and hotel tower proposed for Southbank exceeded the city council's height limits by almost 300m.

"There are a couple of things that are sacrosanct - one is the Shrine and the other is the Yarra - and there are rules in the planning scheme to prevent that sort of overshadowing," Cr Doyle said.

"If something is getting that big that it's overshadowing the Shrine, you'd really have to say, 'What are we gaining through that height?' "

Architects Fender Katsalidis, who designed the nearby Eureka Tower, are behind the Australia 108 project, which would be the world's 18th tallest building at 70 Southbank Boulevard.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy, who has final approval, has previously been positive about the tower, saying that it underlined a confidence in Melbourne and showed that Australia was "coming of age".

But Cr Doyle said: "It's no good just saying that height equals landmark. Some of the finest buildings in the world, some of the finest architectural solutions, are not great big towers."It is believed council planning officers are concerned about several issues, including overshadowing of the Shrine precinct, wind factors, and how the building would work at street level. The deputy chairman of council's planning committee, Stephen Mayne, said he hoped the state Planning Department had properly consulted the Shrine, especially as the Government was spending $45 million to overhaul the monument in time for the centenary of the Gallipoli landings in 2015.

"It's the sort of consultation which should be a no-brainer for a State Government which is funding a very sensitive expansion of something as iconic as the Shrine," Cr Mayne said.

Shrine CEO Denis Baguley said the Planning Department had provided images of shadows moving across the city on Anzac Day and at the winter solstice.

"From my observation, I don't believe there are issues of overshadowing that will concern us," he said.

"In our view, the effect is minimal - no more than (from) existing buildings and our own trees, and (it's) only late in the day, when there are no services," he said.

"I'll be advising my trustees of that."

The council is also in dispute with the State Government over its approval for another Southbank building, a 72-storey apartment tower proposed for Clarke St. Cr Doyle said there was a tension between council planning rules and decisions by the Planning Minister.

"I can't speak for council, but given where we've gone with Clarke St, I think it would be very difficult for us to then support Australia 108," he said.

Mr Guy declined to make a comment. The council's Future Melbourne committee is to consider a report on Australia 108 next Tuesday. The planned 108-storey tower will be the 18th-tallest building in the world. Picture: Fender Katsalidis Architects/John Gollings

the shadow would be shorter in Summer as the Sun is higher, and in the winter the shadow wouldn't even be over the shrine for more than an hr a day! and if that illustration is accurate - then it will only be the 2 mast-like sections and the shadow doesn't even reach the main building!

what would be bad about a shadow over the shrine?

also it would be the 19th tallest building if finished now not 18th.

Tall buildings are fun to look forward to but this monstrosity needs to be sent to a Design Review panel if such a thing exists. Was never a much of a fan of Eureka but it is positively elegant next to this creature. What's up with the podium balconies? No room to sit since every one will hosting a 20 foot mature Palm tree.

Melbourne is so inviting and animated at street level, it's a shame that skyline interventions like this thing might actually happen. Melbourne needs some curves, some sensuality in the skyline to echo a very cosmopolitan, animated city... with great looking women ;-)

I think if you take out the weird star shaped bit towards the top, it would actually blend quite well into the skyline! I like the spire and its beacon though!

I get the vibe that most think the design is 'ugly'. IMO it's quite interesting and the 'star burst' adds to it in a positive way. I hope it gets built, maybe it's a start of a wave of possible supertalls in Australia.
