I'd like this much better without that observation deck poking out 20 floors from the top. Any way, congrats Melbourne!

I usually like this kind of experimental architecture, but I'm not sure about this particular building. It's unique in many ways,so I say build it!
What I like the most, and at the same way I dislike,is that you can't make the whole building's shape in yor mind once you look at it.

MELBOURNE | Australia 108 | 388m | 1273ft | 108 fl | App

Old thread from 'Proposed Supertalls' page here, given this is about to move from proposal to reality.

Key facts:

- 108 floors
- 388m to top of beacon
- Approximately 660 apartments
- 288-room 6 star hotel
- Star Bar to be located at level 108 (between two columns)
- Construction to begin either late 2013 or early 2014

Going up Down Under: Southern Hemisphere's tallest building

http://travel.cnn.com/melbourne-buil...isphere-439936

Planning approval has been given for Australia 108, a 388-meter skyscraper in the Victorian city of Melbourne that will be the tallest building in the southern hemisphere.

That boast may not last too long with a taller building in South Africa set to be completed in 2018 -- the same year Australia 108 is due to complete.

Victorian Planning Minister Matthew Guy this week approved plans for the US$622 million project, which will be built on the city's Southbank Boulevard.

When complete, it'll surpass Melbourne's Eureka Tower (297 meters) and overthrow Q1 (322 meters) in Queensland's Gold Coast as the tallest building in the southern hemisphere.

Construction is expected to begin early 2014 and it will take three to four years to build, according to an Australia 108 representative.

The design, by Fender Katsalidis Architects (who also designed Eureka Tower), will feature 108 floors of residential apartments, recreation facilities, a "six-star luxury hotel" and a sky bar on the top floor that resembles a glass cube suspended between two pillars near the pinnacle.

“Australia 108 has the ability to define Melbourne and signify our coming of age as a dynamic and progressive international city," said Nonda Katsalidis, co-designer of the tower.

"Nothing like this exists in our part of the world.”

The hotel will be located from level 83 and house 288 rooms. At that height the view will be impressive despite Melbourne's notoriously unpredictable weather.

The design of the lobby on level 83 will appear to be hovering over the city. In addition to the two restaurants and bars, the lobby will feature an observatory lounge with sections of glass floor for brave souls hoping to see the ground from above.

Most of the recreation facilities, including the sky bar and observatory lounge, will be available to the public while other areas will be reserved for residents and guests only.

Details on who will operate the hotel are yet to be released.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy approves Australia 108 project for Southbank

A CONTROVERSIAL plan to build the Southern Hemisphere's tallest tower has been approved for Southbank.

At 388m, the 108-storey tower will be 91m higher than the Eureka Tower.
Planning Minister Matthew Guy has given the green light to the $600 million Australia 108 project, which will feature 664 apartments and a luxury hotel.

"I think this will be a magnificent addition to Melbourne's skyline. Australia 108 will be a signature development that will define Melbourne for decades to come," he said.

Mr Guy approved the building, at the corner of City Rd and Southbank Boulevard, despite initial opposition by Melbourne City Council and concerns it would cast a shadow over the Shrine precinct.

"The Shrine trustees are comfortable with this and the Government has accepted almost all of the council's permit conditions, and I think this will be a magnificent addition to Melbourne's skyline," Mr Guy said.

Designed by Eureka's architects, Fender Katsalidis, the centrepiece will be a 288-room, six-star hotel bursting out from a sky high triangle-shaped feature inspired by the stars of the Southern Cross.

Work on the project, which will create 300 construction and hospitality jobs, could start this year.

Mr Guy said such residential towers were consistent with government policy to concentrate high-density developments in defined areas.

I don't dislike the tower, but if we could decide on the "best" iconic tower for melbourne, then this is not it.

It must be noted that the area this is being built in in the 1990's was a total dump.

Melbourne is awesome. Therefore, I hope that this hideous tower is not built.

Very imposing and crazy supertall. It is the best supertall building to outstand the Melbourne SKyline.

I think that if it weren't such an aesthetic outlier on this design, it'd be less offensive. The tower is otherwise a bunch of parallel lines and 90 degree angles, then seemingly out of nowhere extrudes outward this triangular element. It's very disruptive, so while the sentiment behind its presence may be a good one, the execution is...wanting, and it's therefore difficult to view it in a positive light, at least from an architectural perspective.

True, I hate that thing towards the top, the parallel lines and the abstract looking shapes... ugh

What's so "iconic" about this tower? It's just a tall box with a random star protrusion near the top and a hideous crown. That's not high architecture folks! That's not engineering genious. It's just trash. It would be a disgrace to build this in Melbourne. I hope to got there's a redesign because it's just brutally ugly imo
